  1. WP1.5 meeting Status source term + SGTR Johan Carlsson IP EUROTRANS Lyon on 10.10.2006

  2. Impact of iodine, caesium and caesium iodine in Pb-Bi System Experiment executed at FZK Objective was to find out if the Pb-Bi liquid metals would contain the released iodine, caesium, and caesium iodide. And, to see which quantities and substances that could arise as vapours. IP EUROTRANS Lyon on 10.10.2006

  3. Tests performed IP EUROTRANS Lyon on 10.10.2006

  4. Test 1 (400 ºC, 0.09 g I) • No iodine detected • Test 2 (600 ºC, 0.09 g I) • The membrane did not seal good enough probably and the I sublimated • Test 3 (400 ºC, 0.09 g CsI) • No CsI detected. • Test 4 (600 ºC, 0.09 g CsI) • No CsI detected. • Test 5 (600 ºC, 1.2 g Cs) • Shorter duration of heating than planned. No Cs detected. • Test 6 (700 ºC, 1.2 g Cs) • Shorter duration of heating than planned. No Cs detected in collected liquids. IP EUROTRANS Lyon on 10.10.2006

  5. Planned tests Further experiments are planned with Cs and I at 800ºC and 900ºC. The contract has been signed at JRC and sent to FZK. Execution of experiments are planned within a year. Possibly more experiments can be performed by NRG in the hot cells of the HFR. It would be a fuel pellet that is melted to 1700 ºC. And it would be covered by Pb or Pb-Bi. All volatile fission products would be investigated. IP EUROTRANS Lyon on 10.10.2006

  6. Summary source term The first tests up to 600ºC indicates that I, CsI, and Cs remain in the Pb-Bi and probably form lead iodide and bismuth iodide. Cs forms an intermetallic compound, this immobilization by alloying is highly probable. Because of experimental limitations, no demonstration of I retention at 600 ºC was possible. The new tests be performed in improved test rig at temperatures of 800 and 900ºC. Other experiments are considered in a hot cell of NRG. IP EUROTRANS Lyon on 10.10.2006

  7. Steam Generator Tube Rupture • performed with CFX10 • 3D geometry of a quarter of the reactor vessel based on preliminary ELSY design • Incompressible Pb, compressible steam. Isothermal (700 K). Volume of Fluid. • One steam pipe contains 22 liters  ~8 kg supercritical steam ( = 348 kg/m3; @221 bar,647 K) • So far a constant injection rate of 0.3 kg/s of steam (point source, no phase change) IP EUROTRANS Lyon on 10.10.2006

  8. velocity field normal operation IP EUROTRANS Lyon on 10.10.2006

  9. density field 0-2.5 seconds IP EUROTRANS Lyon on 10.10.2006

  10. velocity field 0-2.5 seconds IP EUROTRANS Lyon on 10.10.2006
