Haven of Calm in a Stormy Region Djibouti Pray for… • Primary religion in Islam with freedom for foreigners. • US and French military presence is stabilizing. • Environmental issues make it difficult for missionaries. • Pray for evangelical fellowships among immigrants. That their living witness would be effective where proselytization is problematic. • Pray for unity among the few believers from Somalia and Afar who are divided by ethnic and tribal forces. • NT is available in Afar and almost all of the OT. Recently revised Somali bible also available. Pray for distribution and acceptance of these resources. • Radio broadcast from TWR and FEBA 7.5 hours per week in Afar and Somali. Pray for open hearts to listen to the truth shared, also that open hearts would find the radio programs.

  5. Haven of Calm in a Stormy Region Djibouti Pray for… • Unreached People groups: • The Afars – nomadic tribal groups in Eritrea and Ethiopia as well. No Christian witness. • Somalis – related ethnically to those in Somalia, but subject to borders established in late 1990’s. They are the key to reaching their kinsmen in less tolerant Solmalia. • Arabs – local and Yemeni. No outreach to this group. • Internationals - being a key port city immigrants from other ports come here for work. No witness present for them although it is acceptable to evangelize these non-muslims.

  7. Dominica Pray for… • Primarily Christian with large Catholic population. Pray for renewal for largely nominal Catholics. • Evangelicals growing with strong leadership. Pray for their continued fruitfulness. • Pray for pastors who must have jobs outside the church to provide for their families due to economic uncertainties. They experience high levels of burn out when not empowered by and dependent on the Holy Spirit in their ministry. • Unreached peoples: Carib Indians indigenous peoples on a reservation – socially isolated. Nominally Christian. Pray for revival.

Dominican Republic Shares Island of Hispanola with Haiti Pray for… • Catholicism unofficial state religion, syncretism (Santeria) and Haitian voodoo prevalent even among professing Catholics and Christians. Converting to a protestant denomination means ostracism due to strong Catholic power. • Despite challenges, evangelicals have doubled over 20 years. • Indigenous people (ArawakTaino) all but destroyed by foreign disease and Spanish invasion. Slavery repopulated the island. • Violent crime, promiscuity and corruption are amazingly high for a nation with 94% Christian population. • Due to poverty of nation, Christians function in a primarily receive-only mode of operation. Pray for spiirtual maturity to be a serving people.

  10. Dominican Republic Shares Island of Hispanola with Haiti Pray for… • Haitian immigrants experience discrimination and live in harsh conditions. Open to the gospel. Pray for DR church to see these people as a ministry and not competition for limited resources. • Less reached: • Nominal Christians who do not attend church • Upper class who view religion as “for the poor” • Students – Pray for CCCI outreach to students who lack hope for the future and resources to complete education. • Chinese immigrants – only two Chinese speaking churches.

  12. Ecuador Pray for… • Gospel impact on Quichua since 1967 miraculous. (from almost none to over 50% in some areas). • Steady growth of evangelicals in size (70 fold since 1960), maturity and social impact. • Need for stable government to address nations problems. • Pray for harmony between Catholics and evangelicals as the numbers shift. Violent riots have broken out and churches burned where evangelicals perceived as threat. • Pray for evangelistic vision of the church to reach out. • Unity in the church necessary for further growth. • Cultural sensitivity between indigenous people and Spanish-speakers.

Ecuador Pray for… • Need for pastoral training for biblical foundation of the church. • Ministry to children essential for the next generation. • Missionary work here gained international attention when 4 men working with the Acua were killed. Elliott’s widow returned to share the gospel. Now nearly all of the tribes have churches and scriptures. (The blood of the martyrs…) Pray for their interaction with the outside world as they seek to balance their heritage with modernity. • One of first Wycliff regions. Had to cease work on 12 NT projects. Pray for work in progress. • Lack of missionary vision for the church. • Pray for missions organizations to be sensitive to cultural distinctions without compromising the truth of the gospel.

Ecuador Pray for… • Less-reached groups: • Slum dwellers in Quito and Guayaquil • Upper class who view religion as “for the poor”. • Student groups. • Galapagos Island inhabitants – eco-tourism hostile to Christianity. • Loja province – Operation Esperanza is a multi-agency effort for radio, prayer, evangelism and holistic ministry. • 1200 hours of radio programing in 12 languages including support ministry. One local radio ministry broadcasting to indigenous people in Shuar and 2 in Quinchua. • Jesus film in Chimborazo and Shuar as ell as Spanish. Pray for “Life at the Crossroads” curriculum used after showing the Jesus Film.

Currently without National Leader with the abdication of Mubarak Egypt Pray for… • Persecution and suppression of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) resulted in uprising overthrowing Mubarak. • Scripture is more accessible than ever. Church unity and prayer movement also strong. • Egypt has vast Christian heritage. (Coptic Church - 1st 1000 years of Christianity). • Recognition of this heritage under the new government. • Religious freedom (no Shar’ia law in the upcoming elections.) • Coptic Church leaders to stand firm with mounting persecution. • Spiritual awakening of both nominal Coptic and Muslims alike. • Renewal of the Coptic church through bible study and Holy Spirit. • MB use social welfare to buy influence. Pray for population not to see them as saviors and vote for their repressive values. • Pray for small protestant movement coming out of the Orthodox church growing in influence since 1973.

  18. El Salvador Pray for… • Praise God for stable government putting an end to death squads and assasinations. Pray for recovery from deep wounds resulting from protracted civil war. • Evangelicals have grown from 2.3% to 32% since 1960. Pray for unity and discipleship for these believers. Pray for biblically trained leadership. • Pray for the 3.3 million who live abroad many working illegally. Their remittances home stem poverty. • Move from agrarian to urban society in one generation has caused challenges to infrastructure and social structure.

El Salvador Pray for… • Gangs (maras) attract up to 70% of male youth (15-30) • Cell-based mega-churches have opportunity to influence society. • Indigenous missions vision COMISAL seeks to reach their own population. 165 foreign missionaries currently serving. • Amerindian have received horrid treatment in the 20th century. Pray for culturally sensitive outreach. • 5 Christian TV stations, 30 Christian Radio stations have huge potential to impact for the gospel. • Pray for groups that are ministering to universities. Greatest need is for more trained leaders.

  21. Equatorial Guinea Pray for… • Oil industry give this nation one of the highest per capita incomes in the world. Pray for economic prosperity to raise the plight of the poor and for government look out for interests of the nation not just themselves. • Oil boom brings in foreigners (both evangelicals and muslims). Pray that expats will minster to the needs of the locals as they benefit from the natural resources. • Freedom of the press is very limited and prevents progress on many levels. • Largely catholic population still has strong ties to its animist past as colonial imposition of Catholicism did not bring true conversion.

  22. Equatorial Guinea Pray for… • Training leadership to help nominal Catholics move to a vital relationship with Jesus Christ and put aside their animist past. • Pray for foreign missionaries to have wisdom, grace and humility to deal with indigenous leadership in post-colonial environment. • People groups – • Fang people are the majority (only 2-3% evangelical) • Hausa are muslim (.1% Evangelical) • Ngumba, Benga, FaD’Ambu (less than 1% evangelical) • Bibles exist in 7 languages, Fang NT is in progress. Pray for distribution networks to get them into the hands of believers and seekers.
