  1. Inquiry Strategies for the Information Society in the 21st Century (ISIS-21): A Web-based Resource for Schools

  2. Instruction and design teams Literature review Implementation and evidence-gathering Research interest Publish Research Findings How Has the LTK Been Developed?

  3. The Need • Our educational system needs a systematic approach to teaching the set of Information Literacy competencies. • Few school curricula specifically address the teaching of these competencies, in many cases because the teachers lack basic information literacy themselves. • Previous severe cutbacks in school library staff and teacher-librarian programs have also contributed to a gap in the teaching of information literacy. • This problem is amplified and exacerbated when students complete homework at home as parents also lack information literacyto help the children with effective research and information evaluation strategies. ….but we’re preaching to the converted!

  4. The Need, cont’d From: Mittermeyer, D. & Quirion, D. (2003). Information literacy: Study of incoming first-year undergraduates in Quebec. Montreal: CREPUQ

  5. Relevance to Quebec: QEP Recognition of the need for information, selectionand understanding of appropriate retrieval tools, proper evaluation of web-based sources, synthesizingand summarizing the information found…are all components of Information Literacy…

  6. Our Project • Objective is to teach students (elementary through to secondary), basic information literacy competencies and to provide support as they move through the entire inquiry process. • Our entire projectwill consist of the design and development of the following bilingual, evidence- and web-based modules: • Phase 1 - Planning: How to Articulatea research question and Plan a search strategy, • Phase 2 - Searching: How to Searchfor and Evaluatethe information, • Phase 3 - Using: How to Use the information effectively and Communicate new knowledge

  7. Development of ISIS-21 Prototype • Inukshuk Wireless contract: • $100,000 • Oct., 2007 - Feb. 2009 • Prototype of Phases 1 and 2 designed for late late elementary/early secondary students • Team included members from LEARN, the EMSB and the CSLP • Partners included Quebec Library Association, Canadian Association of Principals, Canadian Association of School Administrators • Linked to ePEARL and offered within the Learning Toolkit

  8. Phase 1 (Planning) Learn Apply Reflect

  9. Phase Two (Searching)

  10. Learn about Internet Retrieval Tools….

  11. Mark sites

  12. Phase 3 (Using)

  13. ePEARL Connection

  14. ISIS-21 Pilot • Students: 211 • Grades: 5-9 • Teachers: 12 • Schools: English Montreal School Board and Foothills School District (AL)

  15. Our Most Important Result….. • A composite learning score was obtained by merging all the student responses to questions that were related to learning information literacy components specifically addressed within ISIS-21. • This score was correlated with the number of hours that students used ISIS-21. • A strong correlation existed (.5) between hours of use with ISIS-21 and the learning of information literacy skills, regardless of enjoyment of the program.

  16. ISIS-21 – Additions to In-context Support

  17. ISIS-21 – Interactive Activities Sample Interface:

  19. Current Plans for ISIS-21 • SSHRC grant proposal awarded that is funding 2010-2013 research project: • Impact of ISIS-21 on: • Information literacy skills • Critical thinking skills • Self regulated learning skills • Collaborating with EMSB and LEARN • Soliciting Grade 5-8 students • Develop print-based material for Phase 3: Using Information • Three year IES (US. Dept of Education) grant proposal of $1.5 million submitted that would fund; • Design and development of full version of ISIS-21 • Small research component: Information literacy, literacy, critical thinking, and self regulated learning skills
