  1. WALKING AND LIGHT ACTIVITY IN BACK PAIN PHYSIOTHERAPY PLANS www.vertexphysio.ca (825) 525-2852

  2. UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF WALKING IN BACK PAIN PHYSIOTHERAPY Walking is often included as part of many Back Pain Physiotherapy plans. It’s a low-impact activity that helps improve circulation, muscle function, and joint movement. For individuals with back discomfort, walking can support gradual recovery when guided appropriately. It requires no equipment and can be easily adjusted to fit different levels of ability. Before beginning or increasing walking routines, it’s important to talk to a physiotherapist. They can provide guidance based on your current condition and goals. Walking in short, comfortable sessions may help reduce stiffness and encourage movement without placing too much strain on the back.

  3. WHY LIGHT ACTIVITY SUPPORTS BACK RECOVERY? Light activities, including gentle stretching and mobility exercises, are often introduced during Back Pain Physiotherapy. These movements aim to support balance, core strength, and coordination. They are typically selected based on the individual’s comfort and mobility level. Staying active in a controlled way helps maintain flexibility and may support the healing process. Over time, adding light tasks such as climbing a few stairs or using resistance bands may assist with building strength. The focus is on steady progress rather than pushing through discomfort.

  4. HOW WALKING IS INTEGRATED INTO A BACK PAIN PHYSIOTHERAPY PLAN? Surfaces such as indoor floors or flat outdoor paths are commonly suggested for initial walks. Footwear with good support can contribute to a more comfortable walking experience. If walking becomes uncomfortable, the activity can be paused or adjusted. In many Back Pain Physiotherapy programs, walking is included as a regular daily or weekly goal. The physiotherapist may suggest a step count or time- based goal, such as walking for 5 to 10 minutes at a time, a few times per day. Gradual increases in distance or duration are often recommended as comfort improves.

  5. TIPS TO STAY ACTIVE WITHOUT INCREASING DISCOMFORT Stay consistent: Rest as needed Start small: Light movement before walking may reduce stiffness. Keeping the head aligned and avoiding slouching helps with balance. Short sessions are more manageable than long ones. Taking breaks is part of managing activity levels. Daily activity, even for a few minutes, can make a difference. Warm up: Use proper posture: Light activities should feel comfortable. If pain increases, it’s important to inform your physiotherapist.
