Types of Group Interaction Cooperation • Individuals combine to reach a group goal • Best occurs when resources are limited • Vital for social life • Key question: “How can we reach our goal?” • Types of cooperation • Coming together after emergencies (floods, earthquakes, etc.) • Habitat for Humanity • Sharing duties
Types of Group Interaction Conflict • When groups work against each other for a larger share of the rewards • Must defeat the opponent (which may be more important and more satisfactory than reaching the goal) • Benefits of conflict: • Can bring unity within groups • Brings attention to social inequality (Civil Rights Movement) • Can change norms, beliefs and values (acceptance of diversity)
Types of Group Interaction Social Exchange • Voluntary action with the expectation of getting a reward • Reward is the key, not the relationship • Key question: “What’s in it for me?” • Different than cooperation: • Individuals may not benefit directly through cooperation • Reward from accomplished task is not main goal of cooperation
Types of Group Interaction Coercion • Forcing members of a group to behave a certain way • Opposite of Social exchange • Power and benefit only flow one-way • Power may be shown in many ways: • Physical force • Ridicule • Rejection • Withdrawn affection • Refusal of recognition
Types of Group Interaction Conformity • Behavior that matches group expectations • Vital to group interactions • Churches, teams, families, governments • Often times a product of groupthink • Groupthink: when members of a group surrender their individual thoughts to match those of the group
