  2. - - - - - - - - - - - RULES - - - - - - - - - - - • In your group, look at the top of each slide. It will state ”Essential,” “Non-Essential,” “Appositive,” “Complex” or “Compound.” • Essential – No commas; the subordinate clause is necessary for the sentence to make sense; “that” is ALWAYS essential • Non-Essential – One to two commas (depending on location in sentence); the subordinate clause is not necessary for the sentence to make sense; “which” is ALWAYS non-essential • Appositive – One to two commas (depending on location in sentence); the noun or noun phrase is not necessary for the sentence to make sense • Complex – An independent and dependent thought; a comma will ONLY be present if the subordinate conjunction comes at the beginning of the sentence. • Compound – One comma separating two independent thoughtswith a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) • Read the two statements below the title. The first statement must be kept intact for essential & non-essential clause sentences; for compound and complex sentences, the first and second statements should stay intact. • Combine the statements with a relative pronoun to create an essential or non-essential subordinate clause, add a noun phrase after a noun to make an appositive, or combine the statements to create a compound or complex sentence. Underline the subordinate clause or coordinating conjunction.

  3. Non-Essential • Statement 1: Justin Timberlake’s CD comes out next week. • Statement 2: Justin Timberlake’s CD is called The 20/20 Experience. EXAMPLE ANSWER: Justin Timberlake’s CD, which is called The 20/20 Experience, comes out next week.

  4. Complex • Statement 1: It is snowing. • Statement 2: School is cancelled. ANSWER: Because it is snowing, school is cancelled.

  5. COMPOUND • Statement 1: Grendel is a demon with skin made of barbed steel. • Statement 2: Beowulf is able to defeat Grendel without armor or weapons. ANSWER: Grendel is a demon with skin made of barbed steel, but Beowulf is able to defeat him without armor or weapons.

  6. ESSENTIAL • Statement 1: The J-Town seniors will graduate high school. • Statement 2: Only the J-Town seniors whopass their classes will graduate. ANSWER: The J-Town seniors who pass all their classes will graduate high school.

  7. COMPOUND • Statement 1: I always forget to do my homework. • Statement 2: I can’t get my grade above a C. ANSWER: I always forget to do my homework, so I can’t get my grade above a C.

  8. Appositive • Statement 1: Barack Obama is in his second term at the White House. • Statement 2: Barack Obama is the current president. ANSWER: Barack Obama, the current president, is in his second term at the White House.

  9. COMPLEX • Statement 1: “Breaking Bad” won the Emmy for most outstanding drama. • Statement 2: “Breaking Bad” did not win as many Emmy’s as expected by fans. ANSWER: Even though “Breaking Bad” did not win as many Emmy’s as expected by fans, it won the Emmy for most outstanding drama.

  10. Non-essential • Statement 1: From his ship, Beowulf could see the Danes’ coastline. • Statement 2: The coastline stood illuminated by Hrothgar’s castle in the distance. ANSWER: From his ship, Beowulf could see the Danes’ coastline, which stood illuminated by Hrothgar’s castle in the distance.

  11. essential • Statement 1: The shooter of the police officer has still not been found. • Statement 2: The police officer worked for the Bardstown Police Department. ANSWER: The shooter of the police officer who worked for the Bardstown Police Department has still not been found.

  12. APPOSITIVE • Statement 1: Louisville is home to the Cardinals. • Statement 2: Louisville is the 16th largest city in the United States. ANSWER: Louisville, the 16th largest city, is home to the Cardinals.

  13. COMPOUND • Statement 1: Michael Jordan is one of the greatest basketball players of all time. • Statement 2: More players are slowly sneaking up on his once untouchable title. ANSWER: Michael Jordan is one of the greatest basketball players of all time, but more players are slowly sneaking up on his one untouchable title.

  14. NON-Essential • Statement 1: A J-Town senior needs to speak at graduation. • Statement 2: The senior can be anyone who would like to volunteer. ANSWER: A J-Town senior, whoever would like to volunteer, needs to speak at graduation.

  15. Essential • Statement 1: Your ILP includes a lot of information. • Statement 2: The information will be useful in your search for post-high school colleges or careers. ANSWER: Your ILP includes a lot of information that will be useful in your search for post-high school colleges or careers.

  16. Appositive • Statement 1: Mrs. Doepke is from Colorado, but she now lives in Kentucky. • Statement 2: Colorado is one of the sunniest states in the US. ANSWER: Mrs. Doepke is from Colorado, one of the sunniest states in the US, but she now lives in Kentucky.

  17. COMPLEX • Statement 1: There will be a dance after the football game. • Statement 2: Homecoming is October 11th. ANSWER: Since Homecoming is October 11th, there will be a dance after the football game.

  18. COMPOUND-COMPLEX WITH A NON-ESSENTIAL • Statement 1: You are good at English. • Statement 2: You should become a writer for the Courier Journal. • Statement 3: You will be semi-famous. • Statement 4: The Courier Journal is the most read paper by Louisvillians. ANSWER: Because you are good at English, you should become a writer for the Courier Journal, which is the most read paper by Lousvillians, so you will be semi-famous.
