  1. Chapter 20 Section 2THE NEW FRONTIER Main Idea: While Kennedy had trouble getting his ideas for a New Frontier passed, several goals were achieved.

The Promise of Progress • Kennedy set out to transform his new vision which he called the NEW FRONTIER • Called for Americans to be new pioneers and explore science and space • Kennedy had difficulty turning his vision into reality • Faced a conservative coalition • Kennedy lacked popular mandate because he won by a slim margin

  3. Stimulating the Economy • Unemployment hovered around 6% which was one of the highest since WWII • Pushed for deficit spending • Department of Defense received a 20% budget increase for nuclear missiles • Increase minimum wage $1.25 an hour • Provided assistance to cities with high unemployment

  4. Addressing Poverty Abroad • Peace Corps: Program of volunteer assistance to the developing nations of Africa, Asia, and Latin America • People of all ages and backgrounds signed up to volunteer • Alliance for Progress: offered economic and technical assistance to Latin American Countries • U.S invested 12 billion to Latin America

Race to the Moon • On April 12, 1961, Soviets put first human in space • Kennedy saw this as a challenge and wanted to put first man on the moon • NASA constructed new materials in FL • July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong took first step on the moon • Universities expanded science programs as a result of success

  6. Addressing Domestic Problems • Many Americans suffered at home • Poverty was brought to American’s attention in The Other America • Kennedy called for a “national assault on the causes of poverty” • Presented Congress with a civil rights bill and a tax cut proposal

  7. Tragedy in Dallas • 1963 Kennedy was losing popularity because his advocacy for civil rights • Jacqueline and John sat in a open Air limousine • Kennedy was shot in the head • Many asked Who had killed the President and why? • Television became “the window of the world”

  8. Tragedy Continued • Lyndon Johnson takes office • Dallas Police charged Lee Harvey Oswald with the murder • Palm print found on the rifle • As Oswald was being moved from jail, a nightclub owner named Jack Ruby shot and killed Oswald • Kennedy’s Assassination funeral was televised

  9. Unanswered Questions • Many wondered if Oswald was part of the conspiracy • Warren Commission was formed to investigate • They concluded that Oswald had shot the president while acting on his own • Later in 1979, reinvestigation concluded that Oswald was part of the conspiracy

  10. What did America learn for the Assassination? • Our system of government is remarkably sturdy • Smooth transition to vice president • Many other investigation have been made about Kennedy’s assassination to explain the tragic event
