  1. Team Conversions • You walk 350 yards to class. How many inches is this? • You wait 3 weeks for the new Glamour magazine to come in the mail. How many hours is this? • You wait 42 minutes for class to end. How many years is this? • You’re on a plane traveling at 450 mph. How many feet per second are you traveling? • Try number 1 on page 4 of your packet.

  2. Bell Work 9/22 – 2 minutes • 2000 m = ? km • 150 cm = ? m • 4,500 mm = ? m • 5.5 m = ? mm

  3. Objectives! • Learn the factor label method! • Why does it work (2 reasons).* • Be able to use it to convert units on top. • Be able to use it to convert units on bottom. • Be able to use it to convert units on top and bottom.

  4. Factor Label Method • What is it? • It’s a very useful method of solving problems and converting units. • Units are extremely important in this method.

  5. Why does the Factor Label Method work? 2 principals • Anything divided by itself is 1 • Anything multiplied by one is the same value

  6. 1. Anything divided by itself is 1 In the situation below, x = 5 and y = 5 x = Why? y Can we then say that x = y because they’re the same thing? (5) 1 foot 12 inches 1 foot = 12 inches because they’re the same thing! It’s just a different way of saying the exact same length.

  7. 1. Anything divided by itself is 1 So, if 1 foot = 12 inches and anything divided by itself is 1, than 1 foot = 12 inches

  8. 2. Multiplying something by 1 doesn’t change its value. (8) (1) = 10 (8/8) = X (5/5) = 10 (x/x) =

  9. In the situation below, x = 5 and y = 5. We therefore said: x = 8 y We’ve also established that 1 foot = 12 inches. Therefore…

  10. 2. Multiplying something by 1 doesn’t change its value. In the situation below, 1 foot = 12 inches. We therefore said: 1 foot = 12 inches Therefore

  11. The key here is UNITS! • Let’s try this with 2 ft.

  12. 2.00 ft = ? in 2.00 ft 1 12 in 1 ft 24.0 in X = 24.0 in 12 in is EXACTLY 1 foot, so infinite number of sig figs on those 2 numbers

  13. Tips for Basic Factor Label • Write the given over 1. • Write “x -----------” • Write the old units on the opposite side (top or bottom) so they cancel. • Write the new units on the other side. • Cross out the old units. • When you’ve reached the units you want, multiply the top, then divide the bottom.

  14. Steps to Factor Label Method Word Problems • Write given information AND what you’re looking for • Look at/find conversion factors • Make plan • Setup problem, making sure to cross out units • Solve problem (can multiply and divide in any order) • Round your answer • Double check your answer and setup

  15. 1 ft = 12 in 1 yd = 3 ft 1 mi = 5,280 ft • 3 ft = ? in • 8 in = ? ft • 5.5 yds = ? in • 2 mi = ? ft • 45,000 in = ? mi

  16. Put your hw upside down on your test so I can check it. • It takes 4,549 seconds for a manned mission to get to the moon (which is 250,000 miles away). How many days was this? • A car consumes 25.00 gallons of fuel when driving a distance of 4.00 km. How many gallons will it consume when driving 250.0 miles?

  18. Factor Label with units on bottom. 6.0 ft/min = ? ft/hr

  19. 1 ft = 12 in 1 yd = 3 ft 1 mi = 5,280 ft365 days = 1 year 1 mi = 5,280 ft USING THE APPROPRIATE SETUP, CONVERT. CIRCLE YOUR FINAL ANSWER. • 86 mi/s = ? ft/min • 17 ft/s = ? yd/min • 1.5 mi/hr = ? in/s

  20. 1 ft = 12 in 1 yd = 3 ft 1 mi = 5,280 ft365 days = 1 year 1 mi = 5,280 ft • 25 ft = ? in • 12 years = ? hrs • 86.0 m/s = ? m/min • 17 ft/s = ? yd/min • 1.500 mi/hr = ? in/s

  21. 34 ft/s = ? yd/min 34 ft 1 s 1 yd 3 ft 60 s 1 min X X 340 = 680 yd/min

  22. 25 ft = ? in 25 ft 1 12 in 1 ft X = 300 300 in

  23. 2. 12 years = ? hrs 12 yrs 1 365 days 1 yr 24 hrs 1 day 105,120 X X = 105, 120 hrs

  24. 3. 86 m/s = ? m/min 86 m 1 s 60 s 1 min 5,160 X = 5,160 years

  25. 4. 17 ft/s = ? yd/min 17 ft 1 s 1 yd 3 ft 60 s 1 min X X 340 = 340 yd/min

  26. 5. 1.5 mi/hr = ? in/sec 1.5 mi 1 hr 12 in 1 ft 1 hr 60 min 1 min 60 s 5,280 ft 1 mi X X X X 26.4 = 26.4 in/s

  27. 3 ft/s = ft/min • 5.0 ft/min = ? ft/s • 32 ft/s = ? ft/hr • 45 in/min = ? in/day • 7.0 ft/s = ? in/min

  28. Tips for Word Problems • 18 mph • $20 per student

  29. Bell Work 10/5 • Sam measures the mass of a metal ball on a balance and it reads 50.56 g. She drops the metal ball into a graduated cylinder and the water level goes from 25.5 mL to 28.8 mL. What would the volume of a of 5.5 kg ball of the same metal be? • Convert 1.20 tons to kilograms using the factor label method. Show all of your work, and state your answer with the correct number of significant digits. • What is a difference between the measurements “pounds” and “kilograms” that people often forget about? • Light speed is 300,000,000 m/s. What is this in mi/hr? • Jared’s pencil has a density of 0.75 g/cm3 and a mass of 5.5 g. What is it’s volume? • 450,000,000 s = ? years • 550 mi/hr = ? ft/s • The moon is 250,000 miles away.
