  10. Well … – will it work? • November – Definition of portal use cases for “services” – Installation of software – Start of writing “service” implementations • December-January – Software turns out to be powerful but badly documented – Delays writing of portal functions • January – Tests show performance problems • February – Performance is a major concern – “crashes” with only 10 users – vendor promises to help … but there is still hope ?

  11. Yes … we have a portal prototype …

  12. … but that one won’t work! • March – Internal crisis meeting – we need to consider other solution(s) – vendor given 2 months to fix the problem – First study of a “home made” .asp-based portal • April – Tests with “our own” portal solution promising – vendor seems unable to do anything – we stop all work on vendor’s portal • May – “Our own” portal works fine in load tests • 25 June – vendor informed – we won’t use their software • 26 June – vendor files for “chapter 11” protection • 26 June – First version of portal launched • IE5.5+ only • Gray • Little publicity

  15. Present – TIPHON – upper part

  16. Present – TIPHON – lower part

  17. First month of operation • ~ 1.000.000 hits • ~ 50.000 visits • ~ 15.000 visitors • Load time 5-10 secs

  18. The new web site While the portal is a working tool for the Technical Organization, the web site is mainly a publicity tool
