CULTURE/CUSTOMS • Emirati culture mainly revolves around the religion of Islam and traditional Arab and Bedouin culture. • UAE has a diverse and vibrant culture. • The influence of Islamic and Arab culture on its architecture, music, attire, cuisine and lifestyle are very prominent as well. • Five times every day, Muslims are called to prayer from the minarets of mosques which are scattered around the country. • The weekend begins on Friday due to Friday being the holiest day for Muslims. • All Muslim countries have a Friday-Saturday or Thursday-Friday weekend. • You should accept refreshment whenever it’s offered, but note that you should always use your right hand for drinking and eating, as the left hand is regarded as unclean. • Similarly, you should avoid showing the soles of your shoes or feet, which implies that you think the other person is ‘dirt’, which is obviously highly offensive. • You should keep your feet flat on the ground and not cross your legs.
GREETINGS • • As Muslims, customary greeting is salaam alaykum, which means “May peace be upon you and may God’s blessings be with you.” Shaking hands and saying kaifhalak comes next. • • Flight Attendants in Emirates Airlines greet passengers with a smile and a warm welcome.
