Understanding Polygons: An Overview of Shapes and Triangles

DESCRIPTION

This guide introduces the fundamental concepts of polygons, focusing on triangles. A polygon is a closed flat shape composed of line segments, with each segment called a side and the meeting points known as vertices. Triangles are classified by their sides into scalene, isosceles, and equilateral. Furthermore, triangles can be categorized by their angles as well, including right, acute, and obtuse triangles. This overview highlights the characteristics and classifications of these geometric figures to deepen your understanding of shapes.

  1. Polygons Abney V. Martinez

  2. Polygon • A polygon is a closed plane figure made up of line segments. • Each line segment is a side. • The point where the sides meet is called the vertex. • More than one vertex are vertices. Tell which shapes are polygons.

  3. Triangles are polygons. We can classify them by their sides. Scalene, equilateral, isosceles Scalene triangles have no sides the same length.

  4. Isosceles triangles 2 sides the same length 2 eyes – 2 equal sides

  5. Equilateral Triangle • Equal sides All sides the same length

  6. Triangles can be classified by angles • Right triangle • Acute triangle • Obtuse triangle Think about angles

  7. Right triangle A right triangle has a right angle A right angle makes a perfect square corner.

  8. Acute triangles Acute angles _ less than 90 degrees Just look at the angles – not the sides

  9. Obtuse Triangles Obtuse – greater than 90 degrees Can you tell which angle is obtuse?
