  3. Three Parts of Health • Health is the condition of your body, mind, emotions and relationships. • Wellness is a state of well being. Physical Health Mental & Emotional Health Family & Social Health

  4. Three Parts of Health • Healthful behavior • Actions that promotes health • Prevents illness • Prevents injury • Prevents premature death • Improves the quality of the environment

  5. Three Parts of Health • Risk behavior • Actions that threaten health • Increases likelihood of illness • Increases likelihood of injury • Increases likelihood of premature death • Harm to the environment

  6. Three Parts of Health • Life skills help you maintain & improve your health. • Make responsible decisions • Resolve conflicts • Manage stress • Use resistance skills • Practice healthful behaviors • A health goal is something that you aim for that involves your health.

  7. Factors that Affect Your Health Status • The environment is everything around a person. • “The people you hang out with can make you or break you”. (what does this quote mean?)

  9. Factors that Affect Your Health Status • Access to health care • Having health insurance • Having enough doctors and nurses • A random event is something that happens by chance and is out of your control. • Unexpected or postponed test • Tornado alert • Some diseases

Taking Responsibility for Your Health • Physical Health • Do I eat a balanced diet every day? • Do I get enough sleep? • Do I have regular medical and dental checkups? • Mental & Emotional Health • Do I make time for fun? • Am I able to resist negative peer pressure? • Am I able to share my feelings with others? • Family & Social Health • Do I avoid dangerous situations? • Do I have a healthy relationship with my family? • Do I make an effort to be responsible with friends & family?

  12. Setting Health Goals • 1. Write the health goal you want to set • 2. Tell how the goal will affect your health • 3. Describe a plan you will follow. Keep track of your progress. Tell who can help you. • 4. Evaluate how your plan worked. Describe what you will do if your plan fails. • A health behavior contract is a written strategy that helps a person reach a health goal.

  13. Health Behavior Contract Health Goal: I will follow a plan to manage stress. Effect on My Health: If I manage stress, I will sleep better. I will decrease the risk of being overstressed and becoming ill. I will be more relaxed. I will be able to concentrate in school. My Calendar: Mon. Tues. Wed. Thurs. Fri. Sat. Sun. How My Plan Worked: I was less anxious during the test. I had a good night’s sleep and ate breakfast. However, skipping Saturday’s task was not a good idea because my notes were incomplete in a few places. Next time, I will try to do everything on my list.
