First things first!

  • Take inventory of the materials you already have!
    • YOU HAVE FREE TIME BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS!!!
      • Use it wisely…
    • Alphabetize your cards
    • Make a catalogue of available materials (esp. multiple schools)
    • If you have set lesson plans, check to see if you have the materials necessary of each lesson
    • If not…
slide18

Make your own materials!

  • Your imagination is the limit!
    • Cards are probably the most commonly used teaching material, but you can make different materials… such as…
  • SANTA FUKUWARAI サンタ福笑い
    • (Japanese “Pin the Tail on the Donkey”)
slide19

Make your own materials!

  • English Boards are great for creativity as well!
  • Caution: Ask JTE before spending more than a few hundred yen on English Board, teaching materials, etc.
slide20

Purchasing Materials

  • You have the option of purchasing materials (games like this Surprise Gorilla); however, ask ahead of time—some schools may reimburse you!
slide21

Create to your heart’s content!

  • Especially if you have ample amounts of free time, explore your school’s craft materials
    • BW and Color Printers
    • Laminators
    • Image enlarger
    • Markers
    • Paint
    • Glue
    • Construction paper
  • If you are not an Arts & Crafts kind of person, get creative on the computer (esp. images of famous people are popular)
slide22

General Tips

  • Be prepared!
    • Write out a lesson plan for yourself
    • Make a checklist of materials you need for each class
  • Be flexible!
    • Last minute changes are often necessary
    • The same activity may not work for every class
  • Be energetic!
    • Lead by example, students will follow
    • Try to have fun and let the students have fun
