  1. Statistics Mean, Median, Mode and Range of Data Set Mean, Median and Mode from a Frequency Tables www.mathsrevision.com Cumulative Frequency Tables and Median Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  2. Starter Questions 4cm www.mathsrevision.com 8cm 5cm 2cm Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  3. Different Averages Learning Intention Success Criteria • We are learning the terms Mean Median, Mode and Range for a set of data. • 1. Understand the differences between the terms Mean, Median, Mode and Range. • 2. Calculate values for the Mean, Median, Mode and Range in a context. www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  4. Different Averages An average should indicate a “measure of central tendency” but should also indicate what the distribution of data looks like. www.mathsrevision.com This is why we have 3 different types of averages to consider Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  5. Different Averages Find the mean of the set of data 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 26 www.mathsrevision.com Can you see that this is not the most suitable of averages since five out of the six numbers are all below the mean of 5 Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  6. Range, Mode & Median Range : The difference between highest and Lowest values. It is a measure of spread. Median : The middle value of a set of data. When they are two middle values the median is half way between them. www.mathsrevision.com Mode : The value that occurs the most in a set of data. Can be more than one value. Created by Mr Lafferty Maths Dept

  7. Different Averages Example : Find the median and mode for the set of data. 10, 2, 14, 1, 14, 7 www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  8. Mean Median Mode Now try TJ4+ Ex 22.1 Ch22 (page 188) www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  12. Frequency Tables Range, Mode & Median Learning Intention Success Criteria • Understand and be able to work out the range, mode and median from a frequency table. • 1. We are learning how to work out the range , mode & median from a frequency table. www.mathsrevision.com • 2. Solve problems using a frequency Table. Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  13. Range = High – Low = 5 – 1 = 4 Median Middle value Between 10th and 11th = 2 Mode value that occurs the most = 1 Frequency Tables Mean Median Mode & Range Example : This table shows the number of light bulbs used in people’s living rooms (f) x (B) 1 7 7 x 1 = 7 Adding a third column to this table will help us find the total number of bulbs and the ‘Mean’. 2 5 5 x 2 = 10 3 5 5 x 3 = 15 www.mathsrevision.com 4 2 2 x 4 = 8 5 1 1 x 5 = 5 Totals 20 45 Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  14. Range = High – Low = 5 – 0 = 5 Mode value that occurs the most = 1 Median Middle value Between 15th and 16th = 1 Frequency Tables Mean Median Mode & Range Example : Here are the results of a S3 survey of the number of siblings In their family. S x f Adding a third column to this table will help us find the total number of siblings and the ‘Mean’. 0 9 0 x 9 =0 1 13 1 x 13 = 13 2 6 2 x 6 = 12 www.mathsrevision.com 3 1 3 x 1 = 3 5 1 5 x 1 = 5 33 Totals 30 Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  15. Mean Median Mode From a Frequency Table Now try TJ4+ Ex 22.2 Ch22 (page 191) www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  16. Starter Questions www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  17. Cumulative Frequency Tables Working Out The Median Learning Intention Success Criteria • Be able to add a third cumulative column to a frequency table. • 1. We are learning how to calculate the median Frequency Table. • 2. Be able to calculate the median from a Cumulative Frequency Table. www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  18. Cumulative Frequency Tables Working Out The Median Example : This table shows the number of eggs laid by a clutch of chickens each day over a seven day period. C. Freq. Total so far 1 2 2 A third column is added to keep a running total. This makes it easier to get the total number of items. 2 3 5 3 1 6 You have 1 minute to come up with a question you can easily answer from the table. www.mathsrevision.com 4 6 12 5 5 17 6 8 25 When was the Median egg collected. Collected on Day 5 7 4 29 Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.

  19. Mean Median Mode Now try TJ4+ Ex 22.3 Ch22 (page 193) www.mathsrevision.com Created by Mr. Lafferty Maths Dept.
