Explore the concept of succession in ecosystems, which involves gradual changes in communities over time. Learn about primary and secondary succession, climax communities, pioneer species, biotic and abiotic factors, producers, and consumers. Discover the stages of ecological succession and how disturbances like natural disasters impact ecosystems.

Succession in Ecosystems Mrs. Karim
Succession- • a gradual changes in a community over a period of time. new populations of organisms gradually replace existing ones • There are three different stages to succession: • Primary succession • Secondary succession • Climax Community
Primary succession- • Life start forming in rocks, no Soil. Examples: • – Lichens grow bare rock
Primary succession- • New bare rock comes from 2 sources: • 1. volcanic lava flow cools and forms rock
Primary succession- And the other source of rocks • 2. Glaciers retreat and expose rock
Pioneer Species- • the first organisms to colonize or grow in anewsite • Ex: lichens are the first to Colonize lava rocks
Secondary succession- • sequence of community changes that takes place when a community is disrupted by natural disaster or human actions – takes place on existing soil
Secondary succession- • Ex: • A fire levels portions of a forest • Soil will be left behind to start secondary succession
Secondary succession- • Ex: • A farmer plows his field
Climax community- • a stable, mature community that undergoes little or no succession
Climax community- • Ex: In most of Virginia, the climax community would be adeciduous oak–hickory forest
Vocabularies Biotic : living things. Give example Abiotic: non living things. Give examples Producers: plants …. Why? Consumers: human, animals, bacteria,… why?
