Vocabulary • Exports - goods or services produced in one nation but sold to buyers in another nation. • Boom - to progress, grow, or flourish vigorously, as a business or a city • Devoured - To destroy, consume, or waste • Pirated - One who makes use of or reproduces the work of another without authorization. • Fending off - To make an effort to resist • Disparate - things so unlike that there is no basis for comparison • Demilitarized - remove all military forces from (an area).

Feudalistic - based on a system in which only a few people have all the power in a way that seems very old-fashioned • Democratic - organized according to the principle that everyone in a society is equally important, no matter how much money they have or what social class they come from • Colonial - relating to a country that controls and rules other countries, usually ones that are far away • Wielding - to have a lot of power or influence, and to use it • Levying - to officially say that people must pay a tax or charge • Tariff - a tax on goods coming into a country or going out of a country • Renegade - someone who leaves one side in a war, politics etc. in order to join the opposing side - used to show disapproval

Analyze your country’s popular culture using the following three criteria: • What might these examples of pop culture suggest about this country's economic status, politics, cultural values and traditions? • What, if any, influence from other countries and cultures is evident in this country's popular culture? • What, if any, influence do these pop cultural symbols and icons have on other countries (e.g., South Korean entertainment in the East Asian market)?

  5. Draft an outline for a segment of an entertainment news program • Scripts, video and audio clips may be needed and should be divided evenly with your group. • You will present a 2 minute segment tomorrow in class.
