Epidemiology. More than 1 million cases of shock present to US ED's yearly.Approx. 30-45% of patient in septic shock, and 60-90% for those with cardiogenic shock die within 1 month of presentation.. Pathophysiology. Shock is defined as: circulatory insufficiency that creates an imbalance between tissue oxygen supply and demand.Four categories of shock:Hypovolemic CardiogenicDistributive Obstructive.
