Vision: The Southern Oxfordshire Local Development Strategy aims to develop thriving sustainable rural communities by improving the competitiveness of our agricultural and forestry sectors and by using our unique rural landscape and traditions as a foundation to provide appropriate local employment opportunities and address social exclusion.To note; figs presume projects supported by Sept DMG endorsed by SEEDA.

Encouraging enterprise and business innovation. • M311, M312, M331 & M121 • LDS Priorities: farming & agricultural holdings, rural micro-businesses, forestry and woodland businesses, business support & networks • LAG Additional Strategic Priorities: connectivity to the ‘rural’, strong economic impact, certain sectors (local food, rural tourism, green technologies, social & community enterprise), a collaborative approach, infrastructure projects. • Project Activity: High level of project activity, approx £326,704 committed to date. 15 projects supported. Farm diversification initiatives, small rural businesses. Also two business training and support projects – TRACTOR & Myforest.

  3. Improving tourism in rural locations and enhancing heritage and landscape. • M313 & M323 • LDS Priorities: Tourism (retaining visitor spend in rural areas, public reconnection with the countryside, promoting local distinctiveness & sustainable business development), craft & conservation skills, woodland and forestry • Project Activity: Slow uptake in initial stages of the LEADER programme. Projects now coming forward. £110,970 committed to date, towards 4 projects. • Sector specific LAN to promote and encourage networking? M421 possibilities?

  4. Addressing social exclusion. • M321 & M322 • LDS Priorities: Access to services and amenities, hidden deprivation, ageing population, fuel poverty • Project Activity: Steady uptake in community based initiatives, particularly access to services.£152,775 committed to date to 8 projects. Full available budget utilised last year. • Wider social exclusion issues? M421 possibilities?

  5. Skills development for rural areas. • M331 & M312 • LDS Priorities: up-skilling in general, business competitiveness, Farming & Forestry sectors, skills for those delivering LEADER projects. • Project Activity: £41,848 committed to 2 large business training and support projects –TRACTOR & Myforest. • Limited Remaining budget, despite financial profile figs.

  6. Addressing climate change is a cross cutting theme. • All Measures (M121) • LDS Priorities: educate the local community, investigation of bio fuels & alternative energy sources, and promotion of local supply chains • Project Activity: cross cutting issues, consideration for all projects due to sustainability checklist, and discussion at DMG. TRACTOR project offers businesses and farms advice and support on resource and energy efficiency. • M421 possibilities?
