When to use elimination using Multiplication. • Use when the system of equations can not be solved by simply adding or subtracting. • Example: • 3x + 4y = 6 • 5x + 2y = -4 • Neither variable can be eliminated by adding or subtracting.
So how would you solve the problem? • 3x + 4y = 6 * multiply the second • 5x + 2y = -4 equation by -2 • So now we have • 3x + 4y = 6 • -10x - 4y = 8
Now add the equations • 3x + 4y = 6 • (+) -10x - 4y = 8 • - 7x = 14
Solve • - 7x = 14 • - 7 -7 • x = -2
