Elimination Using Multiplication

Elimination Using Multiplication. Chapter 7 Lesson 4. When to use elimination using Multiplication. Use when the system of equations can not be solved by simply adding or subtracting. Example: 3x + 4y = 6 5x + 2y = -4 Neither variable can be eliminated by adding or subtracting.

  1. Elimination Using Multiplication Chapter 7 Lesson 4

  2. When to use elimination using Multiplication. • Use when the system of equations can not be solved by simply adding or subtracting. • Example: • 3x + 4y = 6 • 5x + 2y = -4 • Neither variable can be eliminated by adding or subtracting.

  3. So how would you solve the problem? • 3x + 4y = 6 * multiply the second • 5x + 2y = -4 equation by -2 • So now we have • 3x + 4y = 6 • -10x - 4y = 8

  4. Now add the equations • 3x + 4y = 6 • (+) -10x - 4y = 8 • - 7x = 14

  5. Solve • - 7x = 14 • - 7 -7 • x = -2
