The Spotlight Challenge “All designs should have a single concept based on the work of a visual artist (painting, sculpture, drawing, and or illustration) or architect.” “The rationale for these choices should be strongly reflected in the written justification submitted as a part of the entry.”

  4. Should you stay traditional? • The Duke and Duchess of York - 1667

  5. Move forward in time a little? The Bermuda Group – John Smibert 1729

  6. Or a lot? Allan Ginsberg’s Family – Richard Avedon, late 1960’s

  7. Choose a particular style, like Cubism? Portrait of Fernandeand NushLuard, Pablo Picasso, 1938

  8. Pop culture? Engagement Ring – Roy Lichtenstein, 1961

  9. Must Haves!! • No matter what piece your design is based upon, the rationale should include: • An analysis of the piece identifying design elements that will be evident in the new design, and how they will be re-interpreted. • A justification of how the themes of the play connect to the artwork, and a defense of the suitability of the artwork to the play.
