    2. What is a preceptor? A teacher; an instructor. An expert or specialist, such as a physician or surgical technologist, who gives practical experience and training to a student.

    3. Duties of preceptor to student Knowledgeable of the procedure Teach the student Relinquish some control Fairly evaluate the student To give constructive criticism

    4. Characteristics of a preceptor Patience Communication Have an interest in teaching

    5. What are the responsibilities of the preceptor? To know the OR policies and/or know where to access them.

    6. What are the responsibilities of the preceptor? To know the school policies. For example: Sharps transfers Sharps injuries Recapping hypo’s Tucking in shirts

    7. What are the responsibilities of the preceptor? To know how to do the paperwork and fill it out correctly. This will prevent frustration for the student and the preceptor. It will save you valuable time.

    8. What are the responsibilities of the preceptor? Know the chain of command If there is a problem know who to contact and how to get in touch with them.

    9. What are the responsibilities of the preceptor? To be a resource person for the students and the instructors. You are the person the students and instructors when the hospital gets a new piece of equipment.

    10. What are the responsibilities of the preceptor? To be a role model for the students For example: Demonstrate professionalism Adhere to the principles of aseptic technique Attendance

    11. What are the responsibilities of the preceptor? To be honest in your evaluations of the students. You only hurt the student if you are not honest. Probably no student should be ready for the highest grade possible their first week of clinicals.

    12. What are the responsibilities of the preceptor? To reinforce what is taught in the program.

    13. What are the responsibilities of the preceptor? Suggest changes Talk to the clinical coordinator Attend advisory meetings

    14. What are the responsibilities of the preceptor? Develop open communication between yourself and the program.
