WHAT IS FUTURE FACTORY? • ERDF supported project established in 2009 • … now extended until 2015 with a total budget of £4 million • Collaboration between NTU schools: CADBE, NBS and others • Objective to assist East Midlands SMEs to adopt more efficient and sustainable ways of doing business: • Through…. sustainable product and process design, supply chain & logistics, packaging, energy consumption, marketing, training…..

WHAT WE OFFER: • ASSISTANCE (2 days engagement with SMEs) • Workshops, events and expert panels with internationally renowned speakers • Business needs analysis & future scenarios • Research assistant support • COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS (min 2 days) • Short customised projects, research & analysis, product development & testing • Access to specialist resources & technology • Heavily subsidised expert consultancy, recommendations & objectives • GRADUATE PLACEMENTS • Subsidised employment of recent graduate • ‘Live’ student consultancy projects

Co-op Product • Developed Portal to share re-use/ recycling ideas • Networking launch with SMEs, staff and students • 6000 visitors - week 1 • Nottingham Playhouse • Thermal imaging of energy hotspots in listed building • Recommendations for energy efficiency and cost savings • First improvements currently in progress

Hugh Frost Designs • Initial support to recruit a product design graduate… • …. who developed new product as well as business plan for its roll out • …. which led to business award entries and prizes, including free office space and consultancy, as well as investment pitch opportunities • HF Designs are predicting substantial business and sustainability benefits as a result of this intervention.

Carbon Reduction Action Plan: Group student project • 2010 = 21.09 CO2 Tonnes • 2011 = 13.27 CO2 Tonnes • 7.82 CO2 Tonnes reduced in one year • = 27% reduction Notable Outcomes Students identified a supplier of a coal that could potentially save Memsaab 30% of energy CO2 emissions equating to: 10tonnes of CO2
