Business Education for engineers? • To introduce students who have a quantitative background to the issues of decision-making in business • To understand a managerial perspective, i.e. to take in not only the engineering and product-focused aspects but also the market, financial, and organizational aspects of business decisions

  5. Why should engineers do business? • ‘The world depends on engineers’. • An engineering degree will give you the skills to solve difficult technological problems. And demand for good engineers is always high, in every country around the world. • Engineering is the most common undergrdauate degree amongst Fortune 500 CEOs.

  6. What can engineers do? • The “Business Engineers”, as consultants, can offer practical advise and coaching to motivate directors and owners to develop their own skills, improving efficiency and structure within their business.

  7. Can Engineers Be Successful In Marketing? • Anyone can be successful in marketing. Why not Engineers? • “If you act successful you will be successful”.

  8. How engineers become CEOs... • CEOs surveyed were found to have strong communication and strategic thinking skills enhanced by leadership. • In comparison, engineers were discovered to be good at problem solving but, in general, lack leadership and communication skills • There is some overlap between the skill sets of CEOs and engineers. Thus by effective education and training, engineers may be in a better position for the transition into the management.

David Packard (1912 –1996) was a co-founder of Hewlett-Packard (1939), serving as president (1947-1964), CEO (1964-1968), and Chairman of the Board (1964-1968, 1972-1993). • William Reddington Hewlett (1913 – 2001) was an engineer and the co-founder, with David Packard, of the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP). Hewlett received his Bachelor’s degree from Stanford University in 1934, an MS degree in electrical engineering from MIT in 1936.

  12. Michael Saul Dell (b. 1965) is an American multibillionaire businessman and the founder and CEO of Dell, Inc The son of a stockbroker, Dell had his first encounter with a computer at the age of 15 when he broke down a brand new Apple II computer and rebuilt it, just to see if he could!
