  1. Chapter 6 – technology, digital media, and curriculum integration Mallory phillips, Taylor hines, cynthiapopa, laurenhendricks

  2. Describe the use of computers in computer labs and media centers versus classroom instruction • A computer or technology lab is a designated classroom filled with computers, and usually teachers are scheduled or can schedule them for their classes. • A media center is like a computer lab with other relevant technology material. • Technology has been proven by research to be more effective then computer and media labs when integrated into the content and placed in the classroom at the point of instruction • Technology can enhance learning by using the computer to research during a teachable moment. Mallory Phillips

  3. Identify ways to plan for technology integration • The teacher has to assume her role as facilitator of learning. To not always dictate learning but rather motivate learning. • The key to successful technology integration is to identify what you are trying to accomplish with the standards. • Welliver’s Instructional Transformation Model is often used to plan for technology integration. • Welliver’s instructional Transformation Model • Familiarization • Utilization • Integration • Reorientation • Revolution Mallory Phillips

  4. Curriculum is defined as the knowledge, skills and performance standards that students are expected to acquire in a particular grade level. • Curriculum Standards define what students are expected to know at certain levels of education. These standards vary from state to state and usually cover core subjects. • Benchmarks are specific, measurable outcomes or indicators that are usually tied to a curriculum standard. The curriculum standard may be the same across grade levels, but the benchmark increases in difficulty from grades 3 to 12. Taylor Hines

  5. Technology Integration (or curriculum integration) is the combination of all technology parts (such as hardware and software) together with each subject-related area of curriculum to enhance learning. Technology integration can use technology to help students meet curriculum standards and learner outcomes. • While using technology, teachers must remember that technology is a tool to help enhance instructional strategies. Technology cannot improve learning unless teachers know how to use and integrate technology into curriculum-specific areas. Taylor Hines

  6. Explain various planning tools and instructional models • Planning Lessons with Technology • KWL Charts • An instructional planning tool that assists teachers in crating curriculum-specific objectives based on the knowledge of their students. Cynthia Popa

  7. Assure model • Analyze the Learner • State Objectives • Select Methods, Media and Materials • Utilize Methods, Media and Materials • Require Learner Participation • Evaluate and Revise Cynthia Popa

  8. Ways to get started using technology in a new school: • Find out who else in the school is using technology in their classroom. • Consult the principal, media specialist, curriculum resource teacher, or teachers who teach the same grade as you. • Find out if your school has an Technology Committee! • A Technology Committee consists of teachers, administration, and staff who make recommendations to the principal and technology coordinator about teacher/technology related issues. Lauren Hendricks

  9. Ways to get started using technology in a new school: (cont.) • Consult your teachers manual for a list of school committees. • This manual contains regulations, rights, responsibilities, policies and procedures including all of those related to technology. (Most are found on the school website.) • Take time to see if your school offers any professional development or an in-service training for using and integrating about computer technology. • Most School districts offer this FREE! • Consider how your school receives maintenance replacements and different supplies for the technology. Lauren Hendricks
