  2. Goals for This Session • Become familiar with the mathematics and science companion documents • Understand the similarities and differences between the formats

Companion / Clarification Documents Science A series of documents, organized by discipline and units intended to provide science educators and assessment developers with a clearer understanding of the breadth and depth of the HSCE. Mathematics A series of documents, organized by strand & topics intended to provide mathematics educators and assessment developers with a clearer understanding of the breadth and depth of the HSCE.

  4. Companion / Clarification Documents Mathematics • Each document represents a topic from each strand: Algebra & Functions Geometry & Trigonometry Quantitative Literacy Statistics & Probability • MMLA work groups • Examples and activities provided by teachers Science • 4 documents; one for each discipline: Biology Chemistry Earth science Physics • MSLA work group • Teacher leaders and writers

Companion / Clarification Documents Mathematics • Organized by topics within each strand • topics are defined in the HSCE documents • Big ideas are not explicitly stated Science • Organized by units within each discipline • Units developed by state organizations • Each unit is organized around a big idea • Each discipline has 12 units • 3 weeks each teach time; guidelines, not the rule

Companion / Clarification Documents Mathematics • Each document starts out with a description of the strand and standard to which the topic belongs. • This language is taken directly from the HSCE document • Some standards have further clarification Science • Each document starts out with a listing of all the expectations for the strand cross-referenced to the unit in which they appear. • This is followed the units.

Companion / Clarification Documents Mathematics • After the strand and standard information, there is a list of all the expectations in the topic with clarification statements where necessary. • Web documents have hyperlinks to clarifying examples and activities Science • Each unit begins with the list of all the expectations in that unit with clarification statements where necessary. • This follows the big idea and list of standards and content statements linked to the unit expectations.

Science • Instruments, Measurements, and Representations • Representations, instruments, units of measurement, and categories for classification for the unit in general.

  11. Companion / Clarification Documents Mathematics • Assessable content section • Technical advice for assessment developers and item writers at both the state and local level.
