John 16 – Five promises • As Jesus prepared to give himself to the cross, He ministers to the disciples with 5 promises • He would send them the Comforter • He would visit them again after His resurrection • That their prayers would yield peace for them • That He was returning to His Father • That no matter what challenges they face, by virtue of His death and resurrection, they would have peace

  4. Verse 1-6 • He prepares them for the adversity that they will face • He promises that they will have difficulty • They are sorrowful to hear what will become the best news of their life!

  5. Verse 7-11 • When I leave, I will send the Helper, Comforter, Teacher • The Holy Spirit will do three specific things • Convict the world of sin • Convict the believer of righteousness • Declare the ruler of this world guilty

  6. Verse 12-15 • The Holy Spirit will become your leader • He will be the discerner of truth • He will speak the things of God to us in Jesus absence • He can do it for all of us, wherever we are, all the time

  7. Verse 16-24 • A reiteration of His plans and why they are necessary • The analogy of childbirth • An establishment of the power of His Name once He has returned to the right hand of the Father • The promise of asking in His name, and a promise of fulfillment

Verse 25-32 • I was with the Father, I left the Father to come here, and now I go back to the Father • With a tinge of pride, the disciples respond – Oh now we get it! • Jesus cautions them – don’t act like you have it all figured out, your about to bail on me • I will give my life so you have peace, even as you navigate tribulation
