  2. Smell (Olfaction) • Serves 2 primary functions: • Detect potentially harmful or valuable chemicals in the air • Supplements taste • Chemoreceptors- detect smell. Located within the olfactory bulb in superior region of nasal cavity. • Anosmia- inability to smell

  3. 7 Primary Odors • Camphoric  Mothballs • Musky  Perfume/Aftershave • Floral  Roses • Peppermint  mint gum • Ethereal  dry cleaning fluid • Pungent  Vinegar • Putrid  Rotting Eggs

  4. Vomeronasal Gland • Located at the base of the nasal cavity. • Detects body chemicals associated with sexual behavior. • Determines differences in body odor between men and women.
