  1. CATCHCoordinated Approach to Child Health

  2. CATCH • Implemented as a clinical trial from 1991-1994 and evaluated by four regional universities • Based on the CDC health model • Employs holistic approach to child heath • Incorporates classroom teachers, child nutrition services, PE teachers, students and their families

  3. CATCH-research and development CATCH program is based on the CDC coordinated school health model in which eight components work interactively to educate young people about and provide support for a healthful lifestyle.

  4. CATCH research and development cont… • The CATCH Program (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) brings schools, families, and communities together to teach children how to be healthy for a lifetime. • CATCH is effective because healthy behaviors are reinforced through a coordinated approach-in the Classroom, in the Cafeteria, in Physical Education, at Home, and After School. • CATCH is research-based and proven to work. And, most importantly, CATCH makes nutrition learning and physical activity FUN!

  5. GOALS • Positively impact children's health behaviors • Improve the school health environment • Influence and change school health policies and practices of schools

  6. FUNDING CATCH is an evidence-based, National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded program proven to:

  7. CATCH Partners • FlagHouse Inc.- global supplier of resources for physical activity, recreation, education and special needs. • UTHealth-University of Texas school of public health and the Michael and Susan Dell center for the Advancement of healthy living • The Jared Foundation-establishedin 2004 with a mission to eliminate childhood obesity.

  8. CATCH- Early Childhood CATCH Early Childhood (CEC) is designed to nurture a love of physical activity, provide an introduction to classroom-based gardening and nutrition, and encourage healthy eating in children ages 3-5.

  9. What CEC provides for kids • Games and activities that foster a love of exercise • The opportunity to refine developing locomotor, non-locomotor and manipulative skills • Knowledge to identify basic healthy food choices • Music to sing and dance along to • Hands-on gardening experiments • Snack activities for hungry tummies • Hand puppets and cartoon characters that make learning fun

  10. CEC cont… • The CATCH Early Childhood program is unique because the classroom curriculum includes stories with puppets and activities that really resonate with 3, 4 and 5 year old children. Lessons share important nutrition concepts and are crafted so that they can be used in any preschool learning center. Children have fun as they learn about healthy eating; and the PE activities, which come with music, keep kids and teachers moving and singing. • Shreela Sharma, PhD, RD, LD
