  5. Greenland Halibut Fishery • Fishing grounds: Between 600-1300 m. Depth • Catch levels: 22.000 – 25.000 ton • Countries: Spain, Portugal, Canada, Russia, etc • Fleet: around 60 vessels • Gear: Bottom trawl • Last assessment: • XSA Model • Explo. Biomass = 86.000 tons • Fbar (5-10) = 0.432

  6. Fishery regulations • Gear mesh size: 130 mm • Minimum Fish size: 30 cm. • TAC: 16.000 tons • Recovery plan objective: • 140.000 tons of Exploitable biomass in 2018

  7. Deliverables How and When

  8. Deliverables I • historical development of the fisheries, including catches and fleet. • Part of this point are now available (catches) in NAFO, the other points (development of the fishery and fleet) they would be callected by the proyect and it would be available in six mounths. • biological parameters of the target species with up to date description of the current knowledge of their life history pattern, stock structure and status • The knowledge of the biolagical parameters and the life history are availables in differents NAFO Scientific Council Research documents and we will try to compile this information for the final report. • The stock structure information is very poor and we will try to compile this information for the final report. • The most recent stock status information will be revise in the June meeting of the NAFO Sicentific Council and will be available in six mounths. • review of assessment method used so far • The review of the assessment methods will be carried out in a special NAFO working group in next June and the results will be available in six mounths.

  9. Deliverables II • inventory of the fisheries, biological, biodiversity and socio-economic data currently available for management and monitoring purposes. • These data are not available and they will be collected by the proyect. • The biological and biodiversity data will be extracted of the scientific surveys carried out in the area and we expect significant data available. • The socio-economic data will be compile in colaboration with the industria sector and some of these information will be limited and probably subject to a confidentiality restrition. • These information will be available in the final casy study report (12 months). • review of kown and likely impact of the fishery on deep-water biodiversity • Information about this topic is available in the NAFO Working Group Ecosystem Approach for Fisheries Management (WGEAFM) and they will meet next november and the information for the proyect it will be in the final casy study report (12 months).

  10. Deliverables III • review of current and historical management and monitoring procedures. SWOT (Strength and weaknesses, Opportunities and threats) and gap analysis of past and present scientific projects and data collection programmes in terms of fulfilling the data requirements for adequate management and monitoring regimes. • The first part of this point it would be available in the final report of the casy study and part of this information can be found in the NAFO Scientific Council Study Group on Rebuilding Strategies for Greenland halibut met in Februry 2008.

  12. Questions • What it would be the data level needed for the work packages, stock, country,? • What it would be the period for the data? • It would be good have a format to the data by package.
