  6. Intro Researches argue that animals have a way of thinking by using different techniques that are similar to humans. Eugene Linden discussed various examples of animal intelligence in his essay “Can Animals Think?”. Dr. Patterson and Koko the Gorilla in her video, “Watch Koko the Gorilla”, shows a sign of emotional connection and them using language. Animals clearly express higher levels of intelligence instead of just basic instincts. • Intro: Hook: What is interesting about the animals or what do you think about animal’s thoughts? Or, what is the debate about in these videos and essay? For example, have the scientists been arguing about the animal’s intellect, did people know chimps could use tools before Jane Goodall’s movie, & did people know all of these high-order skills until reading the essay? • Give a background on the videos we watched. • Give a background to the essay we read. • What is your claim that you will be defending?

  7. Claim: Eugene Linden thinks that animals demonstrate more intelligence than humans give them credit for. Cite: “Each of these narratives reveals another facet of what I have become convinced is a new window on animal intelligence: the kind of mental feats they perform when dealing with captivity and the dominant species on the planet--humanity.” Another quote or/Clarify: Fu Manchu was able, for example, to manipulate a lock and escape a zoo. Clarify: His ability to construct a complex thought pattern shows their intellect surpasses their instinct which we share between the animals. Body Paragraph 1 • State a claim that the author is making about these animals. • Evidence: What evidence does the author give to defend that animals do have at least some intelligence, however you might define it. • Clarify: How is this evidence of intelligence and not just instinct? Or is it more aligned with instinct? • Cite: Offer other evidence to make your point stronger. • Clarify: Once again.

  8. Animals show signs of intelligent behavior, but they do not have an intelligent thought process similar to humans; they merely exhibit behavior derived from their instinctual nature. Jane Goodall captured footage of several chimpanzees using tools, mothering their baby chimps, and competitions between alpha males and other challengers in a quest for dominance. She stated, “…to some extent, I wanted to model my behavior on the chimpanzees.” Astonishing as it may seem, Goodall learned parenting skills, but this does not constitute as intellect, rather it is instinct. The intimidation of the chimpanzees to usurp the alpha male is also another example of instincts, although it showed a high level of intelligence in his thought process. I would say that they have the ability to formulate and use tools, but their thought process is different, because they do not have the ability to question things as we do. Let’s write together an example Paragraph 2 • Paragraph 2: Video #2 • Claim-Cite-Clarify • Can the animals show signs of intelligent thought as evidenced by the video? • Claim: Do you think they have similar traits or not? • Cite: How do you know? • Clarify: How are you sure this evidence is signs of similarities to humans? • Cite & Clarify: State any other evidence you would like to use and make your point clear.

  9. Paragraph 3 • Paragraph 3 • Video#1: KOKO • Video#1: Watch Koko the Gorilla Use Sign Language in This 1981 Film | National Geographic • Author: Dr. Patterson • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqJf1mB5PjQ • Claim-Cite-Clarify • 1.What is the Author’s Claim in this video? • 2. What is her evidence? • 3. What is her clarification? • 4. Defend or argue against the critics of Dr. Patterson or Dr. Patterson. • 5. Claim: Remember, you are writing from a 3rd person perspective, not from your own • voice. So your claim should resemble something like this: Dr. Patterson makes a good point, but the evidence seems to be on the side of her critics. In other words, do animals show signs of human intelligence?
