  3. History of the Shine On Event The first Shine On Event was held in 1993 in Brisbane to celebrate the efforts and successes of Paralympians. The concept was taken up by the five Southern Districts: 9780, 9790, 9800, 9810, 9820. PP Dawn Watson PHF of RC Essendon, assisted by her Rotarian husband, Jack, then started the Committee and have since been honoured by the Committee with “The Dawn & Jack Watson Youth Trophy”.

  4. WHAT IS A “SHINE ON RECOGNITION” EVENT? The Event recognises volunteer work carried out by people in the community with a disability The volunteers’ disabilitycould be a chronic illness, an acquired injury, a congenital condition and may affect the person’s mental, intellectual, physical, mobility and/or psycho-social functioning. The Awards have two levels: Award Trophies Highly Commended There are two age brackets: 15 – 24 years Youth Over 25 years Adult

THE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL SOUTHERN DISTRICTS COMMITTEE • The Committee is sponsored by the Bendigo Bank Housing • Loan Group • Each Rotary District has two representatives on the Committee • The rotation of the Events around the 5 Districts • Seeks sponsorship & funding • Disseminates materials to the Clubs & District Assemblies • Promotes the Event around the 5 Districts • Promotes the Event to the wider community through • Facebook, Radio & other media • Liaises with District Vocational Service Committees

NOMINATIONS • The Shine Event representatives on each • District Vocational Committee distribute the • Nomination Forms to the individual Clubs around September • Anyone can nominate a candidate, but the Nomination • must be signed off by a Rotary Club member • This is the time to start looking for a suitable Nominee! • Places to start looking: • Interact Australia Employment Agency • Local Disability Support Services • Citizen Advocacy Services • Employers who are “disability-friendly” • TAFE Colleges • Universities • Local Govt. Offices • Vision Australia

Once you have selected your Nominees:- • The Nomination Form Template needs to be: • Filled in (on computer) • Printed out • Signed by nominee/parent/guardian and a Rotarian • Make THREE copies of document & references = 4 sets • Tick the boxes • Closing date: 1st January • Four Copies posted to: • The Secretary, Lara Barrett • P.O. EXPERT PANEL Selection • A three member selection panel comprises special services personnel whose backgrounds are: • Medical • Paramedical • Disability Services or • Prominent persons with a disability • They match Nominees’ information against the Selection Criteria before making decisions re: Adult & • Youth trophies • Their decisions are final

  9. Next year District 9810 is hosting the Event on SATURDAY14th March 2020 Venue: The Uniting Church Hall, Anderson Creek Rd., Doncaster East. Nominees and their families are invited to the Event where all Nominees are presented with a framed Citation which outlines their community work and is presented by District Governors and other invited Dignitaries There are Guest Speakers The Trophies are then presented and afternoon tea

Each Club is responsible for transporting their Nominee and caring for them on the day The “Shine On Recognition” Event is a great way of acknowledging these volunteers in our community It is humbling to see what these people can achieve with the most catastrophic and disabling events, illnesses and accidents that have shaped their lives.

  11. The “Shine On” Recognition Event • The five districts take it in turn to nominate a club to host the “Shine On Recognition Event • The venue needs to have : • “Disabled” parking spaces • Wheelchair access • All access toilets • The Shine On Committee provides funding, support & briefing to the Host Club • The Host Club is responsible for providing a suitable venue, the Guest Speaker/Presenter, local sponsorship, • a photographer, afternoon tea etc.
