What is genre? • Genre-n 1. a. kind, category, or sort, esp of literary or artistic work • Genre is different categories or types of books.

Fiction • Has events that are imaginary and invented by the author. There are different kinds of fiction: • fantasy • realistic fiction • mystery • historical fiction • science fiction • poetry
Fiction - Fantasy • A story with elements such as unreal settings, monsters, and characters with superhuman powers.
Fiction – Realistic Fiction • A story with characters, events, and settings that could be real.
Fiction - Mystery • A suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is not solved until the end of the story. • A work of Fiction dealing with a solution to a crime.
Fiction – Historical Fiction • A fictional story that takes place in a particular time period in the past. • Often the setting is real, but the characters are made up even though they seem real.
Fiction – Science Fiction • A type of fantasy that uses scientific principles and technology • Such as robots and time machines
Poetry • Verse written to create response of thought and feeling from the reader • Often uses rhyme, rhythm, and repition to help convey its meaning.

Traditional Literature - Fables • A story in which animals speak and act like people; usually meant to teach a lesson (Aesop’s Fables).

Traditional Literature - Myths • A legend that tells us about a being with human powers that cannot be explained • Myths attempt to explain what is unknown
Nonfiction • Represents a subject which an author presents as fact or real. Includes the following: Informational Biography Autobiography
Nonfiction - Informational • Texts that provide facts about a variety of topics • Authors purpose is to inform
Nonfiction - Biography • The story of a real person’s life written by another person.
Nonfiction - Autobiography • The story of a real person’s life written by that person.
