  1. Transformation in the healthcare industry With and for the People

  2. Introductory remarks • Misthinking that digital transformation means loss of jobs • Need not assume that adaptation is automatic • People value not yet considered • Designing for profit not service

  3. Changing the context • three barriers to digital transformation are non-digital but are contextual and have to do with people: culture and mind-set, organisational structure, and governance. • fundamental shift from volume to value of care • playing catch up and for us to succeed we need an disruptor mentality, informed citizenry, active political participation, and the development of coalitions

  4. Our call to action, together • Enjoined by the Constitution, whose preamble eloquently declares; “WE, the people….” • Conquer is the divide of ‘us and them’- there’s a lot we can learn from each other, • Collective action now so as to build a strong, equitable health system for all South Africans. • Political declaration on Universal Health Coverage that; every person – no matter who they are, where they live, or how much money they have – should be able to access quality healthcare services without suffering financial hardship

  5. Inefficient and costly current health system • South Africa ranks the worst in the world in terms of health efficiency and effectiveness - despite the fact that it has the world’s most expensive healthcare system, reaching almost 10 percent of its GDP • Healthcare spend was R414.5 in 2017 estimated to rise to R560 bn in 2022 - equates to R8102 per capita and 8.4% of GDP (Africa Health, 2017) • the fundamental problems in our healthcare system as simply: it is a for-profit system, not a healthcare system and it does not reflect values of our society.

  6. HIV/AIDS Conditional Grant in KZN

  7. Allocation by sub-programme

  8. Umgungundlovu District

  9. Digital Transformation in healthcare • Transformation is about and for the PEOPLE. • Currently, healthcare emphasizes political power and economic dominance within an unequal society • Expressed in the debates around NHI reflecting different interest groups' political and economic goals

  10. Conclusion • Global governance and health at a turning point, forced to look back and ahead. • HIV/AIDS, Ebola, SARS all united us in ensuring delivery of healthcare – it’s possible! • To succeed in health, we need to cast our eyes wider and identify disruptors who can make things happen. • The World Economic Forum White Paper (2016) suggests four digital themes: • Smart care: improve patient outcomes and lower the cost • Care anywhere: healthcare move closer to the home • Empowered care: citizens to take a more active role • Intelligent healthcare organisations (IntelliGEMS): data-driven solutions
