  1. Jesus At the WellPrinciples in Personal Evangelismfrom John 4

  2. Why Personal Evangelism? • To follow Jesus’ example (Luke 8:4-15) • To answer Jesus’ prayer (Matt. 9:37-38) • To be NT Christians (Acts 8:4) • To bear fruit and be wise (Prov. 11:30; Jn. 15:1ff) • To fulfill our Christian duty to teach others (2 Tim. 2:2; Heb. 5:12ff; 1 Pet. 3:15)

  3. Jesus At the Well He Was Intentional (4:1-5) • To fish, you must go where the fish are (Matt. 4:19) – you must make contact with the lost – you must get the seed out of the bag (Lk. 8:11), the salt out of the salt shaker (Mt. 5:13) • Paul made regular contact (Acts 17:2) • We must “come” to the Savior, then “go” to the sinner (Acts 9:11)

  4. Jesus At the Well He Was Sacrificial (4:6-8,40,43) • Jesus was tired from his journey, but he made time for evangelism • We too get tired from weekly activities, but we must sacrifice and make time for evangelism (Mt. 16:24)

  5. Jesus At the Well He Was Unprejudiced (4:9,27) • Jesus and Paul took the gospel to everyone (Rom. 1:14; 1 Cor. 9:19ff; Col. 1:23) • We must take the gospel to everyone (Mt. 28:19; Mk. 16:15; Acts 10:34-35)

  6. Jesus At the Well He Was Opportunistic (4:10-15) • Jesus and Paul often turned daily conversation into teaching opportunities (Jn. 3:4-5; 9:39-40; Acts 17:16ff) • The world around us has its mind on the physical; we must turn people’s attention toward God and His Word (Col. 4:3-6)

  7. Jesus At the Well He Was Truthful (4:16-26) • Jesus and Paul corrected errors with the truth (Acts 17:23) • Many living in sin are ignorant, misguided, deceived, or dishonest, and need correction • We must correct error with the truth of God’s Word (2 Tim. 2:25; 3:16)

  8. Jesus At the Well He Was Urgent (4:27-34) • Jesus and Paul put a priority on evangelism (Rom. 1:14-16; 1 Cor. 9:16-23) • Many Christians do not evangelize simply because they are too busy doing other things; we must put evangelism first (Jude 22-23; 2 Thess. 1:8-9)

  9. Jesus At the Well He Was a Visionary and Encouraged Immediacy (4:35) • Jesus and Paul looked for the harvest and immediately worked to bring it in • We must look up and see the harvest (2 Cor. 6:2)

  10. Jesus At the Well He Encouraged Cooperation (4:36-38) • Jesus and Paul realized the importance of working together in evangelism • We must work together (1 Cor. 3:5-9,12ff)

  11. Jesus At the Well Be content with Jesus’ Words (4:39-42) • The Samaritans believed because of Jesus’ words • True faith and conversion is based upon the words of Jesus (Acts 2:37; 11:14; 15:7; Rom. 10:17) • We must stay away from any gimmicks or social-gospel approaches to personal evangelism

  12. Jesus At the Well Begin with Who You Know Best (4:27-29,39) • Jesus and Paul started with people they were familiar with (Acts 13:42,44) • We can start with those closest to us (Acts 10:24; 1 Pet. 3:1)
