Understanding Respiratory System Vocabulary: Key Terms and Functions

Explore essential vocabulary related to the respiratory system, including key terms such as "lungs," "pleurae," "alveoli," and breathing patterns like "tachypnea" and "dyspnea." This comprehensive overview covers important concepts like external and internal respiration, as well as various conditions affecting breathing, such as apnea and hyperpnea. Familiarize yourself with the anatomy of the respiratory tract, including the larynx and trachea, as well as the definitions of medical terms related to the respiratory system to enhance your knowledge and understanding.

  1. Respiratory Vocab.

  2. Lungs • Main organ of the respiratory system, provide the body with oxygen and eliminate carbon dioxide from the blood.

  3. Pleurae • Double layer membrane on the outside of the lung.

  4. Pleural Cavity • Space between the two pleurae.

  5. Respiratory Tract • Passageways through which air moves in and out of lungs.

  6. External Respiration. • Breathing; exchanging of air between the body and the outside environment.

  7. Internal Respiration. • Bringing of oxygen to the cells and the removal of carbon dioxide from them.

  8. Cilia • Small hairs in nasal cavity.

  9. Aspiration • Food gets pulled into the larynx.

  10. Larynx • Voice box.

  11. Trachea • Wind pipe.

  12. Bradypnea • Slow breathing.

  13. Tachypnea • Fast breathing.

  14. Hypopnea • Shallow breathing.

  15. Hyperpnea • Abnormally deep breathing.

  16. Dyspnea • Difficult breathing.

  17. Apnea • Inability to breathe.

  18. Orthopnea • Difficulty in breathing, when lying down.

  19. Cheyne-Stokes Respiration • Irregular breathing pattern; apnea followed by deep labored breathing.

  20. Alveoli • One-celled, walled cluster of air sacs at the end of the bronchiole.
