As a non-profit organization, our goal is to assist the Uinta National Forest in identifying optimal locations for 5 new yurts to generate revenue from park visitors. Through GIS analysis and site mapping, we aim to minimize travel distances, utilize gradual slopes, and prioritize safety while enhancing recreational opportunities. The project involves data layers including roads, trails, forest boundaries, terrain features, and ownership data, with a focus on sustainable development. Definitions • As a non-profit organization, our intent is to assist the the Uinta National Forest with developing recreational accommodations, capable of generating revenue from park visitors. • A Yurt is a round dwelling used by the nomadic people of Russia and Mongolia, because they are strong and portable. • A Yurt can be constructed for a cost of $10k - $40k. • A Yurt can be rented for $75 - $150 a day during peak times.
Project Objectives • Finding viable locations for 5 new Yurts in the Uinta NF. • Minimize travel distances from roads and trails. • Use gradual slopes to reduce construction difficulties. • Locate areas above the snow line for recreation. • Avoid rivers and lakes by a minimum distance. • Avoid areas of hazard or exposure.

Conclusions Initial GIS analysis yielded several hundred matching polygons, ranging in size from less than a 1 foot up to 1/5 of a square mile. Reducing these selections for further review, we chose the 15 largest areas for closer evaluation. These areas provided broader allowances for the small yurt locations. Based upon a winter hiking distance, we located our proposed yurts 5-10 miles apart from each other. Our analysis and maps provide possible spatial arrangements for the 5 defined yurts with location alternatives as well.
