What is Standard Temperature and Pressure (STP)? • Standard Temperature and Pressure is defined as 273.15 K and 1 atm • “Standard” because used throughout the world tocompare results and experimental conditions
Why do all gases occupy the same volume at STP? • According to the ideal gas law, PV=nRT • Regardless of the gas, If pressure=1atm and temperature=273.15, then solving for V, 1 mole of any gas occupies a volume of 22.4 L • At STP 1 mole= 22.4 L
Even though gas molecules have different sizes (look at atomic masses), according to KMT, the volume of a gas particle is negligible to the space in occupies. • Therefore all ideal gases with the same number of moles under the same pressure and temperature conditions will have the same volume!
Key Point 3: How do I convert between moles and liters of a gas at STP? • 1. Identify the givens (underline) • 2. Determine if the temperature and pressure are at STP. • 3. Identify the unknowns. (circle) • 4. Use the conversion factor 22.4L = 1 mol • 5. Set up the problem so that your units cancel. • 6. Solve
Example 1: Jaime has 5 moles of a gas at STP. What is the volume of the gas?
Example 2: Irving has 45 L of nitrogen in a balloon at STP. How many moles of nitrogen are in the balloon?
Example #3: Extension—Can we use molar volume AND stoichiometry in the same problem? 2ClNO2+ NO 2NO2 + 2ClO 40 L of NO gas is combined with excess ClNO2 at STP. How many liters of NO2 gas are formed?
2ClNO2 + NO 2NO2 + 2ClOExample #4: 32 L of ClNO2 gas are combined with excess NO gas at STP. How many liters of ClO gas are formed?
