  1. Medicare DME benefits can include Do you have questions about catheters, incontinence or Ostomy supplies? the following: Prescription Drugs: Medicare may pay for all the doctor's office visits, outpatient drug administration (O.D.D.) procedures, and medical supplies to a patient needs. This includes covered drugs, over-the-counter drugs, Medicare Part D prescription drugs, outpatient medical supplies, lab services, X-rays, laboratory services, professional liability insurance, and laboratory equipment. Outpatient Services: Medicare may pay for ambulance services, acute care hospitals, long-term care hospitals, inpatient and outpatient hospice services, and other non-hospital services the hospital can provide. The only exceptions are when a patient has a Medicare supplement policy, which may not be used to pay for hospital services. Inpatient Services: Medicare may pay for acute care hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and other non-hospital-based services for the treatment of all but the most severe medical conditions. This includes covered drugs, ambulatory services, skilled nursing facilities, skilled-nursing facilities, acute-care rehabilitation facilities, other outpatient services, inpatient detoxification services, hospice care, mental health and substance abuse treatment, acute-care hospitals, inpatient psychiatric care, and psychiatric inpatient care. For patients who have both Medicare supplemental policies and Medigap plans, Medicare pays 100 percent of the fees for covered services they receive. Patients who do not have Medicare supplemental policies may still be eligible for some Medicare benefits, including, but not limited to, surgical procedures, obstetrical or gynecological procedures, diagnostic imaging procedures, medical laboratory tests, radiology, dental and prosthetic surgery, and certain dental services. The majority of covered benefits offered through Medicare supplemental policies can be purchased separately from the policies. Other covered benefits include but are not limited to, temporary living allowance benefits, home health care, personal care services, hospice care, and mental health and substance abuse counseling. Medicare DME will cover costs for preventive care such as screenings for prostate and breast cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and cholesterol. It also covers gynecologic procedures, anesthesia, and care for aging and disabled patients. Medicare will also pay for additional services for serious illness that is treatable through the standard course of medical treatment provided by the hospital. Many types of personal and home health services are not covered by Medicare DME. These services are typically part of an out-of-network benefit, meaning they are not covered by the same policy that Medicare plans on using. If a patient does not want to use the insurer's plan, Medicare DME will pay for those services, although it will not reimburse a claim. Claim forms must be filled out separately for out-of-network and in-network benefits. The patient will need to fill out both forms and submit them to the hospital of their choice, or to the Medicare DME office. There are no co- payments when a patient gets covered services out-of-network. Once the claims are approved, the patient should return the forms to the Medicare DME office for verification of

  2. coverage. Both forms must be signed by a doctor and an authorized representative. It is wise to file for DME right away if you expect a full benefit payment. There is usually a waiting period for enrollment of up to two months before the coverage is actually provided.
