  4. Background • Fiji Trades Union Congress only National Centre in Fiji • FTUC has no union membership database • Difficult to get accurate information: • on unionisation rate • union membership

Background • Time consuming and difficult to disseminate union information on one to one basis (tertiary students, researchers, union members, consultants, etc) • FTUC becoming aware of IT potentials (long term project on capacity building) • Create a website and a database to disseminate information easily

  6. Target Groups • FTUC National Centre Office Bearers (General Purpose Committee - GPC) • FTUC Staff • FTUC’s 36 Trade Union Affiliates and their members • The general public and organisations

Development Objectives • This workplan will contribute to: • Enhancing and empowering better communication • Enabling FTUC to improve and get more precise data on union membership percentage breakdown by sector/industry, gender & age • Providing facts and figures on trade union research and press releases • Using I.T. (website & database) tools for organising & recruiting membership • Improving better relations with union members

  9. Immediate Objective 1 • To redesign and redevelop the FTUC web pages for the National Centre and do website updates • informative , regular updates • create more web pages (currently 10 web pages) such as, “Why join Unions”, opinion box, worker rights and redesign FTUC homepage, etc

  10. Immediate Objective 2 • To create a trade union membership database • N.C. to have a computerised union membership database and format extended to affiliated unions with computers

  12. Indicators of Achievement • Web-site : • Creation of additional web pages (currently 10 web pages) • Get the number of visitors visiting the site weekly for comparison • Have an opinion box in the web page • Train 1 National Centre staff on updating Website

Indicators of Achievement • Database • Keep a record of database accesses via either the electronic (web site) or off-line • Increase union membership • Number of email enquiries received • Train at least 5 members or trade union staff on database • Target at least the major unions with computers i.e. FPSA, FTU, FB&FSEU to have database and train them

Activities • Websites • Form a work-group to re-design the web-sites • The work group will propose a new design and content • Seek approval from the General Purpose Committee (FTUC Office Bearers) • Redesign the current FTUC web-pages • Train National Centre staff to update the web pages • Collect information daily for updating newsroom web page from daily newspapers and other union sources.

Activities • Website • Send fortnightly or weekly reminders to Affiliates to send any suggestion or inputs for the web-site • Liase with Women and Youth Committee Secretaries and President on articles and web materials to be upload regularly • Do email and press releases on the new FTUC website • Train a National Centre staff on updating web-sites

Activities • Database • Form a work-group to design a database • Create a simple database • Seek approval from the FTUC General Purpose Committee • Assist in creating databases for individual unions who have access to computer and train them where possible • Identify key individuals in each affiliates to gather and input data in the database

Activities • Database • Background research and liasing • Final approval by the FTUC’s General Purpose Committee to upload on the web • Inform the members of the new database in the FTUC newsletter and letters to their affiliates • Liase constantly with the key individuals (in each affiliates) in updating the databases and seek assistance from them to monitor the number of users
