Decisions! • Volunteering to Serve as On-Call Duty Chaplain is a Commitment to be Available When Called to Respond to an Emergency situation at Phoebe • On-Call Chaplains freely take upon themselves a Serious Obligation & Responsibility Come to the Aid of People in Crisis • Upon being Assigned as On-Call Duty Chaplain, • Check to make sure all of your Contact Information is Correct & Up to Date (e.g. name, phone numbers, etc.) Volunteering to Respond

Make sure the Assigned Week will Work for You • Insure that there are no Special Dates that fall during your Duty Week (e.g. birthdays, baby sitting, dog/cat sitting, anniversaries, previously scheduled events, etc.) • Search out Conflicts that might interfere with you Responding when called • Bottom Line: NOTHING should interfere with your response to a Crisis in Phoebe Volunteering to Respond

Mental Preparation, Calls will come from, • Phoebe Operator, Initially • Primary Caregiver of Patient The Charge Nurse or nurse providing care to patient will usually have a medically traumatic situation for a patient. The situation may be life threatening or the patient may have died & family members have gathered at patient’s bedside. The nurse &/or family members may want a chaplain or other religious practitioner present with them to provide pray or other religious rites. Preparing to Respond

  6. Prior Commitment Preparation – Insure all who need to know that you are on call, • Family Members • Employer • Church • Calendar • Other Let them know that if called, you WILL Respond! • Make sure no prior Plans will “tie you up”. Preparing to Respond

  7. Stay close to the telephone you indicated for Phoebe to call Put Cell on High Ring – even in meetings, at work or at church (REMEMBER: You have a Commitment to Respond!) Sit near an Exit if possible. NOTE: If you have a family member or other person monitoring your phone, they must understand you have a Commitment to Respond! • Have the “On-Call Chaplain Report Form” & a Pencil close at hand by your phone You will fill out this form on each call received. Information you gather will Determine how you will respond to the Crisis. Preparing to Respond

  8. At Night make sure you have a fresh, ready to wear set of clothes appropriate for responding to a person in Crisis. Shower & Shave (if applicable) the night before, so you will be when the Call comes. Insure you have Transportation at All times. Again, make Sure that Nothing will Hinder Your Commitment to Respond when called! Preparing to Respond

Again, Keep OCCR form near with Pen/Pencil • Answer Phoebe Calls Without Delay • Minimize Missed Calls – Call back Immediately • Record Date, Time, Caller & other important Information on OCCR form • Record your Response Plan & Actual Response • Spiritual Care Department has a Commitment to Phoebe that Chaplains will Respond to Crises Immediately (Provide Guidance or Respond on Site) Responding to the Call

  10. Vitally Important that Chaplains Respond in a Timely Manner • Reputation (Christ & Phoebe) at Stake • Response Plan (dry run) • How long does it take? (to get dressed & get to Phoebe) • Don’t Guess at Response Time Information • REMEMBER: Your Car is not an Emergency Response Vehicle, so please Don’t Speed! • You could have an Accident & Hurt yourself or someone else in your effort to Respond, or you could get a Speeding Ticket – REMEMBER: You Pay! Responding to the Call

Please use the New “On-Call Chaplain Report Form” to record important information to Assist you in your Response (Form copies) • Asking the Right Questions will help you more Appropriately Respond to the Patient/Family in Crisis • Fill out form, gathering the needed information to assist you in Responding to the Crisis • How, When, Where will you Respond? • “Additional Notes” section for narrative notes & back • Form is Confidential, Protected under HIPPA • Deliver each Form to Spiritual Care at end of duty week Responding to the Call

Returning to Normal is Important to Recovery • Goal: Returning to a Normal Functioning Level • Become Aware of the Personal Impact your have Experienced by Responding to this Crisis - has your experience affected your Five Systems, • Physical • Behavioral • Cognitive • Emotional • Spiritual • Where are you needy? Recovering from the Response

REMEMBER: You are still the On-Call Chaplain – So, what do you need from Spiritual Care to Get Back to Normal Functioning? • What Images, Feelings, Thoughts have Stayed with you? • What is going on with you? • Don’t be a Hero! • Honestly Assess Your Functioning Capabilities • Are you in Control of your Five Systems? • You might want to make feeling/thought notes on Self • Are you Overly Preoccupied with what took place? Recovering from the Response

  14. Do you need Debriefing? Important to Your Recovery – Don’t Become a Casualty! • Talking to Counselor or Spiritual Care Professional • Telling Your Story: What happened, how you Reacted & how It has Stayed with you • You might want to ask yourself some Questions, • Am I Okay? • Will I be able to Respond to someone else in Crisis? • Do I need to Talk with someone NOW? • Are there Legal Implications for myself? Phoebe? • What could I have done differently? • How was God Involved? Recovering from the Response

  15. “Job is not Finished Until the Paperwork is Completed” someone has said – How True • Your Written Report is the Only Way Spiritual Care & Phoebe Knows What Actually Happened, so Give an Accurate Accounting of your Activities, • Find a quiet place (P.A. Lounge) to write your Report using the “On-Call Chaplain Report Form” – use back & extra sheets of paper if necessary & staple together • On-line Reporting? Forms On-line? Faxing? Emailing? • See “On-Call Chaplain Report Form” Bottom • “No Calls” Call Spiritual Care Department (229) 312-4670 Reporting Your Response

Without your devotion to the ministry of On-Call Chaplain, this vitally important work would be greatly limited. We know that what you do is so important and will have an impact on lives here and now, and for all eternity.
