  5. Client Background UWP—”The Meat People” • Meat warehouse and distribution center • Located in Middleton, WI. • Approximately 5000 products - pork - poultry - beef - fish

  6. Problem Criteria • UWP Freezer System - Freezer system is unorganized - Difficulties in finding product - Too many products; Too little space • Our Goal - Reduce multiple handling of products • Increase the speed with which orders are picked • Improve safety

  7. Best Practices • Menards • United Parcel Service (UPS) • United States Post Office • Wis-Pak Foods

  8. Alternatives Considered • Do nothing • Implement a plant automation system • Add an additional freezer • Redesign freezer layout and organization system

  9. Data Used • Freezer dimensions • Storage rack dimensions • Inventory lists including product weights and order frequencies

  10. Recommendations • Three freezers with organization by product type • Products should have one functional location • Color-coded racks by product type • Replace racks and increase aisle widths in freezer 5

  11. Expected Benefits • Reduce cost • Reduce training time • Increase safety • Possible to implement in other areas of company

  12. Plans for Implementation • Clean all freezers and reduce inventory • Color-code all designated areas • Allocate temporary storage space • Complete in one day

  13. Lessons Learned • Be specific with project scope • Be in constant contact with client • Seek their needs • Listen closely to their desires • Satisfy all customers • Simple solution is best
