history of springview
History of Springview
  • Nebraska’s 1st wind energy facility
  • Two 750-kilowatt wind turbines
    • 1.5 MW
  • Began operation in 1998
  • Demonstration project
    • verify turbine technology available at that time
    • prove efficiency and reliability of wind energy at distribution voltages in Nebraska
  • Enough electricity was generated to power approx. 380 homes
history of springview4
History of Springview
  • Why Retire?
    • Lack of available replacement parts
    • Significant maintenance/cost issues as units aged
    • Opportunity to demonstrate new technology
  • After 10 years Springview Wind Energy Facility retired in 2007

Springview II

4 yrs after the original turbines were removedBluestem, LLC installed 2 new 1.5 MW (1500 kilowatts) direct-drive turbines

Springview II
  • Bluestem, LLC, signed a 20yr Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with NPPD in November 2010
  • Springview II was officially operational in October 2011
  • NPPD purchases the electric energy produced and shares the technology and Renewable Energy Credits with:
    • Omaha Public Power District
    • Lincoln Electric System
    • Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska
    • City of Grand Island
  • Bluestem, LLC, is responsible for maintenance
  • Springview II is interconnected into KBR Rural Public Power District 12.5kV electric distribution system
  • Average annual output could power 765 homes

Springview II

Springview II was manufactured by Katana Summit in Columbus, NE

First Nebraska-built towers used on a wind facility in the state

New technology in the design of utility-scale wind turbines

Does not use a gearbox

Electric inverters are used to synchronize the generator into the grid versus using gearboxes

Springview II

300 yards of concrete were used in the pad mounts for each tower

Springview II

77 m or 252’

  • Vensys 77 model
  • With rotor (includes blades & hub) diameter 252 ft.
  • Hub height 213 ft.
    • Same as Springview I
  • Direct-Drive Turbines

Springview II

Blades and rotor weigh 42 tons

Generator 46 tons

Tower structure 99 tons

Rotor speed is 17.5 revolutions per minute

Wind speed rated output for the turbines is 29 mph
