  1. On A Portrait of A Deaf Man LO: To explore themes and ideas within On A Portrait Of A Deaf Man.

  2. Michael Jackson Dies Soldier Named How are these people talked about after they died? Is it positive or negative? Why? Now, after reading On A Portrait of A Deaf Man, how is the Deaf Man talked about?

  3. The poem ‘On a Portrait of a Deaf Man’ is an elegy. An elegy is usually: - mournful or melancholic (sad)- a poem or song reflecting on someone who has died or sadness in general.

  4. 1. My prime of youth is but a frost of cares, My feast of joy is but a dish of pain, My crop of corn is but a field of tares, And all my good is but vain hope of gain; The day is past, and yet I saw no sun, And now I live, and now my life is done. 2. ‘O 'Melia, my dear, this does everything crown! Who could have supposed I should meet you in Town? And whence such fair garments, such prosperi-ty?’ – ‘O didn't you know I'd been ruined?’ said she. Decide which extracts are elegies.

  5. 4. This house has been far out at sea all night, The woods crashing through darkness, the booming hills, Winds stampeding the fields under the window Floundering black astride and blinding wet… 5. Farewell, thou child of my right hand, and joy;My sin was too much hope of thee, lov'd boy.Seven years thou wert lent to me, and I thee pay,Exacted by thy fate, on the just day. 6. Let me not to the marriage of true mindsAdmit impediments; love is not loveWhich alters when it alteration finds,Or bends with the remover to remove.O no it is an ever-fixed mark,That looks on tempests and is never shaken; It is the star to every wand’ring bark,Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken. 3. Forgive my grief for one removed,Thy creature, whom I found so fair.I trust he lives in thee, and thereI find him worthier to be loved.

  6. What makes On A Portrait Of A Deaf Man an elegy? List some of the features. • Were there any similarities with the other elegies?

  7. In ‘On a Portrait of a Deaf Man’ Betjeman paints quite a detailed picture of the man before he died. What sort of person was he? Find and highligh: • five things he liked • four aspects of his appearance • one thing he used to do with the poet or voice in the poem • one thing he didn’t like • one thing he would have liked to have done. Compare your answers with a partner and then write a PEE paragraph about the way in which Betjeman presents the deaf man in this poem.

  8. In this poem it seems as if the poet is trying to come to terms with the death of someone close to him. Find a quotation which shows that: • the poet finds death horrible • death has transformed the body of the deaf man • the poet addresses God directly • the poet is struggling to believe in the idea of an afterlife. • Now write a couple of sentences about the attitude to death presented in this poem. The poet seems bitter about death. We know this because he says, ‘………’ He would like to believe that ……… but ………

  9. Homework: Due Friday In the style of On A Portrait Of A Deaf Man, write a short poem about a moment when you lost faith in something: For example: • When you found out Father Christmas wasn’t real. • When you realised you probably wouldn’t win the X Factor or be a pro-footballer • Maybe there has been a time when you wondered about religion? • If you cant think of anything, you can make it up.
