Invasive prenatal tests have been used to look for any kind of genetic disorder in the fetus for a long time now but along with the knowledge of disorder that your child might suffer from came the risk related to the pregnancy itself. Invasive prenatal tests are looked down upon for risks like pregnancy loss. So experts have been working on the different methods that can be used to do genetic testing without harming the child and the mother. One of the non-invasive techniques that they come up with is prenatal cell-free DNA screening.

  2. This method is used to look for certain chromosomal abnormalities in a fetus. During this test, the DNA sample that is required for the testing is obtained from the mother’s bloodstream instead of obtaining it directly from the amniotic fluid or placenta. This is possible because during pregnancy some of the DNA fragments of the fetus escape into the mother’s blood. Sample collector collects the DNA sample from mother’s blood and doctors use these DNA fragments to determine any kind of genetic disorders like Down syndrome, Trisomy 18 and Trisomy 13, etc. Some prenatal cell-free DNA screening tests can also detect the increased chances of- ⚫Trisomy 16 ⚫Trisomy 22 ⚫Triploidy ⚫Microdeletion syndrome ⚫Certain single-gene disorders ⚫Sex chromosome aneuploidy

  3. The main reason that these non-invasive techniques are getting more recommendations than the invasive method is due to its low-risk factor. Cell-free DNA testing poses no physical risk for the fetus and the mother.
