PENILE CANCER Penile cancer is a rare but serious type of cancer that develops on the skin or in the tissues of the penis. It most commonly begins in the skin cells, particularly in squamous cells, which are the flat cells found on the surface of the skin. Although penile cancer is uncommon, it can be aggressive if not detected and treated early. This disease primarily affects men over the age of 50.
SYMPTOMS: • A lump or sore on the penis (usually on the glans or foreskin) that doesn’t heal • Redness, irritation, or swelling • Foul-smelling discharge • Bleeding or pain • Changes in skin color or thickness
CAUSES & RISK FACTORS: • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection • Smoking • Poor personal hygiene • Not being circumcised • Chronic inflammation or skin conditions • Weakened immune system
TREATMENT OPTIONS: • Surgery (main treatment) – may include laser surgery, partial or total penectomy depending on stage • Radiation therapy • Chemotherapy (especially for advanced cases) • Topical creams (for very early stages)
