  1. Ecole nationale des ponts et chaussées http://www.enpc.fr

  2. Main features of a Grande Ecole • graduate school • small scale (about 1000 students per year) • highly selective admission process • mobility and professional involvement of the teaching staff • integrated and flexible education methods • close ties with industry • european and international focus

  3. Studying engineering at a ‘ Grande Ecole ’ • means that you have been selected as part of an elite student body • means that you are trained to face not only technical but also economic and social dimensions of the action • opens the doors to leading positions in public and private sectors.

  4. ENPC • is the oldest engineering Grande Ecole (founded in 1747) • is one the the five most famous engineering Grandes Ecoles with Ecole Polytechnique, Ecole Centrale, Ecole des mines and Ecole des telécommunications • is a research and educational institution for doctoral studies

  5. ENPC Networks • Polytechnicum : 15 research and education institutions situated on Cité Descartes : ESIEE, UMLV... • DRAST : research and Scientific network of Ministère de l’Equipement : LCPC, INRETS.. • ParisTech : 10 graduate engineering Institutes of Paris : ENSAM, ENSCP, ENGREF, ENSMP, ENPC, ESCPI, ENSTA, ENST, INA P-G, Polytechnique

  6. Engineering students at ENPC • Engineering students 735 • exchange students 43 • « mastères spécialisés » 169 • MBA 64 • civil architects and town planners (AUE) 18 • Doctoral students 250 total 1279

  7. 3 5 8 0 ENPC Post graduate studies Integrated undergraduate programme 1rst year Graduate programme 2nd + 3rd year ENPC Engineer’s Degree = European Master ofScience Classes préparatoires Master programmes 2nd + 3rd year • Ecole polytechnique • universities • (France and abroad), double • degree, Bachelor + Pre-doctoral programme (DEA) Doctoral programme thesis = PhD Research and post doctoral programmes Professional programmes « Mastères spécialisés » ENPC MBA DESS

  8. Specialisations • six dominants • civil engineering and construction • transport, planning, environment • industrial engineering • economics and finance • mechanical engineering and materials science • applied mathematics and computer science

  9. Current cursus characterized by : • practical training periods • double focus : • exact and engineering applied sciences, • economics, management and social sciences • international dimension.

  10. The curriculum • Common core of scientific and management courses (1st, 2nd and 3rd years) • courses in the dominant (2nd and 3rd years) • a final project (3rd year).

  11. Out-of-school training • students work alternately in the Ecole and outside • at the beginning of the 1st year : training period in a company • at the end of the 1st year : scientific internship in a research centre • between the 2nd and 3rd years : one-year internship or two- month internship in a company • at the end of the 3rd year : final project.

  12. Research at ENPC • 11 research centres • 190 researchers (130 located at ENPC) • 144 PhD students • 2 M€ of contracts with industry.

  13. Disciplines and research fields • a wide range of disciplines : • mathematics and computer sciences, • mechanics and physics of materials and structures, • geology and geo-technical engineering, • environmental sciences, • economics, • social sciences.

  14. ENPC Laboratories • CEREAD environment, air and pollution • CEREVE water, urban and environment studies • CERAS socio-economics analysis • CERMICS mathematics, computer science and scientific computing • CGI engineering geology • CIRED environment and development • LATTS technical, regional and business • Institut Navier (CERMES, LAMI, LMSGC) mechanics • LMS solid mechanics • LVMT town, mobility, transport

  15. Doctoral studies • 187 students (40% from abroad) • 30/40 thesis completed every year • research done in ENPC’s research centres (2/3) or in partners institutions (1/3) • ENPC is involved in five doctoral programmes.

  16. Professional programmes • MBA programme • Post-graduate professional courses (one year : “mastères spécialisés”) • Continuing Education (short programmes)

  17. Continuing education • 230 sessions (2 to 5 days) • 50 sessions dedicated to one company • 7000 students per year • services in educational engineering.

  18. E-learning • Lectures available on-line (www.enpc.fr) • A team dedicated to e-learning • The goal : to manage the cultural change from lectures to e-learning • European (Portal, EQO, SIG-DLAE, etc.) projects.

  19. Grande Ecole Virtuelle des Ponts • E-learning for initial education • E-learning for “life-long-learning” • Validation of professional experience

  20. Quality & accreditation • A general concern (all lectures are evaluated, ISO 9000 for services) • ISO 9000-2000 for life-long-learning • Accreditation (MBA and SIG-DLAE) • EQO : a database of quality approaches http://www.eqo.info/
