  1. 2nd July 2012Unit 1 : Catch Up sessionLO: To upgrade all Unit 1 tasks were necessary to pass/merit/distinction standard.Outstanding Task: M2/D1 Starter Watch and listen carefully to the clip – we are then going to have a group discussion on the topic of whether this man’s changed quality of life should grant changes in the law to allow doctors to assist him to take his own life. Locked in Syndrome Locked-in syndrome is a condition in which a patient is aware and awake but cannot move or communicate verbally due to complete paralysis of nearly all voluntary muscles in the body except for the eyes. Total locked-in syndrome is a version of locked-in syndrome where the eyes are paralyzed as well. In what ways can Tony Nicholdson – communicate? eg think about other types of communication....

  3. Unit 1: Tasks to complete? Task 1 (P1) • Imagine that you are working in a health centre on a work placement and have been asked to produce clear and easily understandable information poster for people who need technological aids. The poster should explain what technological aids are (include diagrams) how they work and how they will help to improve communication.

  4. Task • Read your feed back sheet to ensure you know which tasks you still have to complete. • Now ensure you use the book or chapters on frog to help you upgrade each task to Pass/ M/ D standard. The following pupils must complete group discussion task: Renee/ Alex/ Rebecca/ Hannah C/ Jade/Akriti/James/Dylan/Chelsea/Emily/Reilly Ellie(?)

  5. Task 2 (P1, M1) Clearly explain and describe (with images) what is meant by and give examples of; • Verbal Communication • Non Verbal communication • Written Communication • Technological aids

  6. Assignment 2: Identifying and Overcoming Barriers Task 1 (P2) • Make a mind map that identifies barriers to effective communication. • Choose 8 factors that you have identified on your mind map. Describe how these factors can act as barriers to effective communication and suggest ways to overcome them.

  7. Assignment 3a: Take Part in a One-to-one Interaction Task 1 (P3) • Explain the communication cycle. • Imagine that you are working for a telephone help line for the NHS or you are a doctor consulting a patient. Write a script with a partner on an issue of your choosing and perform it. Identify communication skills that you use and write them on the scripts such as tone of voice, use of language, expression and body language.

  8. Assignment 3b: Group Interaction  Task 1 (P4) • In groups of 3 or 4 discuss the statement “doctors should be trained in effective communication as well as medical advances as part of their professional development”. Each member of the group should take notes and identify communication skills that were evident and barriers which were faced and over come.

  9. Task 2 (M2, D1) • Describe any barriers to effective communication that were experienced during your two interactions, were they over come? • Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the interactions (both verbal and non verbal) • Analyse your own communication skills and identify what would you do differently in future interactions?

  10. Plenary • Have you included all your new upgraded work in your folder? • Check you have included everything and have a cover page. • Put all tasks in order including front sheet and feedback sheet.
