  1. Welcome to the Dark Side Rugby Refereeing A Way to give back to the game.

  2. Session Objective • By the end of this session the participants will be able to describe the general principles for refereeing.

  3. What qualities should a good referee possess. • In your groups make a list to share with the class. • May also list some “nots”.

  4. Three Basic Concepts • Safety • Equity • Laws

  5. Safety • Key to your success or failure as a referee. • If it looks dangerous stop it. • Rugby is a sport which involves physical contact and had inherent dangers. Must insure compliance with the Laws of the Game for Safety. • Flashpoints in a match.

  6. Equity • Referee must be fair to both sides. • Even if the referee is wrong in interpretation of the law, be consistent. • Players want fair and equal for both teams. • (or a least for their team)

  7. Law Knowledge • The referee must know the law and administer it fairly for both teams. • Must use the law to create a fair contest for the ball, safety and a fun match for all. • Use the laws to create space for the players to operate. • Law knowledge creates referee confidence.

  8. Enjoyment • Referee must enjoy what he/she does. • Paramount for referee and players to enjoy the match.

  9. Communication • Voice • Clear oral communication is vital if the to players understanding what the referee wants. • Voice can be used to prevent offences from taking place. • Color and number when possible. • Must be confident but not officious.

  10. Whistle • Acme Thunder is recommended. • High pitched shrill, squeaky whistles are not recommended. • Whistle tone and volume. • Loud blast for a Try or Penalty Try. • Very loud for a penalty. • Medium for scrum. • Small for ball into touch.

  11. Body • Use firm body language. • Make a decision and live with it. • Use signals to help players and fans on the side. • Signals in back of Law Book. • Deep South Advice/Levels/Back Chat/Coaches/Fans

  12. Referee Sequence • Whistle • Signal • Call • Very important so players know what to do. Let’s practice.
