  1. NEWS-HOUND the brown dog newsletter SPECIAL 2010 CHALLENGE EDITION brown dog Registered Charity 1111550 Raising money to help men, women and children who have cancer www.cancerbrowndog.co.uk (Web site under development)

  2. Breaking News 2010 is a special year – it’s our 10th Anniversary brown dog is a registered charity (formed in 2000 by ex. cancer patient Mark Storer with Anil Patel and Peter Little) that raises money to help men, women and children who have cancer across the UK In the last 9 years brown dog have raised £200,000 brown dog is unique and proud of the fact that every pound raised goes directly to the people who need it i.e. no admin costs To mark this occasion we want to do something special We want to raise £50,000 to purchase a Molemax 111 state-of-the art skin cancer dermoscopy imaging system which will provide early detection of skin cancer and save lives If we raise £50,000 brown dog will also achieve a critical milestone in it’s history i.e. £Quarter million raised This target won’t be easy, it’s big a challenge We plan to raise most of this money through our annual challenge on 5th June 2010 To mark our special occasion we are going back to the Lake District to undertake the Wordsworth Challenge which was the very first challenge we did We want you to join us on The Wordsworth Challenge on 5th June 2010 (climbing 8 mountains in 14 hours) This pack provides more information and explains what you need to do to join us

  3. 9 years ago a cancer patient had a mission When I was told I had cancer and that I would need 6 months of chemotherapy I thought my luck had run out. When I was told after my treatment that I was in full remission, that’s when I realised I was really one of the lucky ones. That’s when I knew in my heart that I needed to raise money to say thank you to those who had saved my life and help others who have cancer. Mark Storer Founder Member Brown Dog

  4. A Challenge was created Our Objective was to raise £5,000 The challenge planned for June had to be postponed due to the foot and mouth epidemic – it went ahead in September. With less day-light in June the first two mountains had to be climbed in the dark!

  5. It was a memorable day!

  6. £23,000 was raised

  7. We used the money to create ‘The Wordsworth Day-Room’ The Wordsworth Room provides a greater degree of home type comfort for patients to make their stay in hospital more comfortable which helps improve their moral, which subsequently helps them to cope with treatment and improves recovery.

  8. Brown Dog was created…. We decided that if we were going to do more fund raising events we needed to have an identity. At the time most of the people who did the first challenge worked for Lloyds-TSB and as such Mark suggested we called ourselves ‘brown donkey’ as a spoof of the Lloyds black horse brand. However, one of the team said “why do we want to be called brown donkey when you have a brown dog – let’s call ourselves Brown Dog”. So brown dog was formed named after Mark’s faithful chocolate Labrador called Colin. Here you see a picture of a very young Colin that we used as the brown dog brand on our marketing materials and t-shirts.

  11. 2010 is our 10th Anniversary Year We want to make it special We want to do something special We want you to be part of it

  12. We want you to help us raise £50,000 We want to purchase this state of the art Cancer Dermoscopy Imaging System (Molemax 111) used on patients with potential skin cancer to provide early detection of malignant melanoma’s (note: malignant melanoma is fatal if not detected early) This equipment is for the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Because Leicester is the National Skin Cancer Centre & University Hospital this equipment will benefit other hospitals across the UK Together we can save lives

  13. More about Molemax 111 • Some Facts • Skin Cancer is rising rapidly in the UK • Malignant Melanoma is now the commonest cancer in young adults (33% under 50’s) • Malignant Melanoma is fatal if diagnosis is delayed • Better methods of early detection and surveillance are essential • Improved detection and surveillance is now available to achieve early detection e.g. Molemax 111 • Raising money to purchase this equipment will prevent many lives being lost • Because Leicester is a national skin cancer centre and university hospital benefit from this will impact the whole country • What is a “Molemax 111”? • A “Molemax 111” is a portable dermoscopy imaging system which captures and stores digital dermoscopic images. • Sequential images of an individual mole can therefore be compared to track changes over time. • Research has shown that early melanomas can be diagnosed on the basis of subtle changes in the dermoscopic appearance before any change can be detected clinically. Additionally, it is also possible to more accurately map the moles of an individual and compare these with subsequent maps to see if new moles or melanomas are appearing or if existing lesions are changing both at a macroscopic and dermoscopic level. This imaging system is fast and simple to use, both for the capture and retrieval of images. • What are the benefits of a “Molemax 111” • Leicester is a national skin cancer centre and receives tertiary referrals from other units in the region. • Installation of a Molemax 111 system in the Department of Dermatology would finally provide an innovative, unique “state of the art” service for the patients attending the skin cancer centre. • It would enhance diagnostic and surveillance skills and would help increase the early detection of melanoma. • The dermatology department is also an academic teaching unit responsible for teaching undergraduate medical students as well as specialist registrars. These are the dermatologists of the future. • Leicester is also a popular department with General Practitioners who are keen to gain more expertise in the diagnosis of skin cancer. • A dermoscopy imaging system would be an invaluable teaching aid for all of these groups. Finally, the dermatology department is also very active in the field of research and members of the department publish regularly in peer reviewed journals. Leicester has a particular interest in skin cancer and dermoscopic diagnosis. A “Molemax 111” would significantly enhance research activity.

  14. 22. Alternative Challenge – 5th June In 2010 for the first time in our history we are planning to organise a parallel challenge (subject to demand) on the same day and same place, which again makes our 10th anniversary very special. We are doing this because; Some of you have told us you don’t like mountains but want to support us Some of you love the Lakes but feel Wordsworth is just too demanding for you Some of you carry old injury’s but can walk on the flat and smaller hills Some of you have a requested a less demanding option

  23. The Tiggy-Winkle Walk The Tiggy-Winkle Walk will be 10-15 miles around Keswick. We are currently looking at two options (shown below) Assuming we have sufficient challengers registered in November & December a dry run will be undertaken in the New Year and final details confirmed. Possible ‘Green’ Walk Route Takes you to where the Wordsworth Challenge starts but instead of going up the first mountain you walk along-side Derwent Water with fabulous views of the Lake and then back to Keswick on the other side of the Lake. Possible ‘Red’ Walk Route Takes you along an old railway line, crossing the river many times on-route to Thelkeld and then brings you back via scenic woods to Keswick
