  1. U.S. Department of Homeland SecurityAssistance to Firefighters Grant Program Fire Prevention & Safety (FP&S) Tentative Application Period September 2005 www.firegrantsupport.com

  2. Three Distinct Programs & Application Periods: • Assistance to Firefighters (AFG): This is the traditional grant program that was open for applications in March and April. • Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER): Geared tovolunteer, combination, and career fire departments to help the departments increase their cadre of firefighters. This was open in June 2005. • Fire Prevention and Safety (FPS): This section of the 2005 grant program is anticipated to be open for applications in September 2005.

  3. Key Change: The AFGP is no longer affiliated with FEMA. The Department of Homeland Security has prioritized the grant program, and is now managed by the Office for Domestic Preparedness.

  4. The purpose of the FP&S program is to assist State, regional, national or local organizations to address fire prevention and safety. The primary goal is to reach high-risk target groups including children, seniors and firefighters. Regional partnerships, state, local, or community organizations (including fire departments) may apply. Private non-profit organizations are encouraged to apply.

  5. The Department of Homeland Security is encouraging communities to develop new, innovative Prevention & Safety programs. “We encourage applicants to develop projects that address an identified fire prevention need. We encourage applicants to develop innovative projects that have a reasonable potential to be effective. We believe there is a greater benefit to funding projects that have been based on risk assessment. (Assessment) methodology should be discussed in the application (narrative).” Source: FP&S Program Guidance 2004
